Jazz Festivals

We dedicate our Instrumental Jazz Festival to the memory of Jazz Festival founder, Mr. LeRoy Anderson, who served CCC from its beginning until his retirement in 1992. Mr. Anderson established a reputation as an outstanding musician and educator; his contributions to the community, the college, his students, and this festival will be remembered always.

The Clackamas Community College Instrumental Jazz Festival was first organized in 1971. Eight local school bands participated in the first festival. From this beginning, the festival has grown to its present size and has had to limit the participation of bands to 50. Participating bands come from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, and Canada.

High school bands are divided by school size into four classifications with score sheets and comments written by three judges. The three highest scoring bands in each division are invited to perform in evening concerts with the winners receiving first, second, and third place trophies in each division. The LeRoy Anderson Sweepstakes Trophy and an Outstanding Musician Award, along with certificates to outstanding players, are also awarded.

During the daytime semifinals, class AAA and AAAA high school bands will be asked to submit a list of six pieces, numbered one to six, to the announcer at the beginning of the 20 minute performance period. One die will be thrown by the Director and the piece having the corresponding number must be played as one of the band's three selections.

Junior High/Middle School and Class A high schools will have their playoffs beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Class AA, AAA, and AAAA high school playoffs are Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

2007: $5.00 per day; seniors free. children under 6 free.
