Study with outstanding artist/teachers
Faculty members' collective experience includes performances, tours and recordings with Pavarotti, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, Arturo Sandoval, the Oregon Symphony, Portland Opera, Don Cherry, Bill Frisell, Bobby Hutchertson, Woody Herman, James Moody, and Leroy Vinnegar among others.
Lonnie
Cline, Director of Vocal Activities, holds a B.A. in Music Education, Vocal
Specialist from Idaho State University, Pocatello, ID. He studied for an M.A.
in Choral Conducting at the Universtiy of Oregon in Eugene, where he was a
graduate teaching fellow and director of two University jazz ensembles. During
Mr. Cline's tenure at CCC, the Vocal Jazz Ensembles and Chamber Choirs have
received numerous honors at festivals throughout the world. CCC vocal groups
have performed in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Europe. Most recently, the
Chamber Singers toured Europe and performed in Tallinn, Estonia at the World
Estonian Friendship Song and Dance Festival. CCC's premier vocal jazz group,
Mainstream, tours regularly, has appeared at IAJE International conventions,
and has released several highly acclaimed CDs. Over the past 25 years, Mr.
Cline has served as adjudicator/clinician throughout the world. In 1998, he
served as a Jazz artist/teacher in residence at the Georg Otsa Music School
in the European Baltic country of Estonia.
LeaAnne DenBeste, soprano, sings and teaches private voice lessons. She opened a private voice studio in 1980 where she teaches 45 students a week. She also gives workshops in vocal technique throughout Washington and Oregon. She is particularly well-known in the Portland area for her vocal warm-ups for choirs. She has soloed with the Seattle Choral Company, Portland Baroque Orchestra, Allora, Portland Symphonic Choir, and Concord Choir. She was a member of Choral Cross-Ties for 15 years and Oregon Repertory Singers for 16 years. The last five years with ORS she was the vocal coach for the choir. She was a founding member of Capella Romana and remains in the group today. From 1988 to 1997 LeaAnne was a member of the acclaimed vocal quartet Cantabile. In April 1998 LeaAnne was the featured soloist in Portland Baroque Orchestra's final concert of the season. In October of 2001 she appeared (along with Maria Jette as first soprano) as the second soprano soloist in the Mozart C minor Mass with ORS. In the Spring of 2002 with ORS she sang the premiere performance of the dramatic solo The Bell Ringer by Robert Kyr, and in June she premiered a solo, Song of Remembrance, by Ann Milikan at the Bach festival in Eugene, Oregon. She has been the Soprano soloist for the Sinfonia Concertante Orchestra once a year since 1992. Most recently she performed the Mozart Solemn Vespers with them on April 29, 2006. LeaAnne has been teaching private voice lessons and voice classes at Clackamas Community College since 1989. She recently added a songwriting class, and next year will be teaching a class in sightsinging.
Clay Giberson teaches our Music Technology courses. Well traveled geographicall and musically, keyboardist/composer Clay Giberson's artistic talent and musicianship are coming to the forefront. A Southwest Washington native, he studied in Coral Gables Fla., University of Miami (B.M. Cum Laude, studio music and jazz) and New York City, New York University (M.M. Magna Cum Laude, music technology) where he studied with Jim McNeely, Fred Hersch and Vince Maggio. Clay has released three recordings on the Seattle based Origin Arts record label. He has performed throughout Europe, Scandinavia, the Mediterranean, the South Pacific, the Caribbean and Japan. Clay also served as musical director for shows in Atlantic City and has performed at such well known New York jazz clubs as Birdland and the Knitting Factory. Having been influenced by all types of music, Clay draws from the idioms in his own compositions and in the interpretation of others. Currently he is a member of the bands "Upper Left Trio" and "Go By Train." He is on the faculty at CCC where he teaches electronic music and piano.
Gary Harris has been performing and teaching in the Portland area since the early 1970s. He has also played throughout the USA and Canada with Jazz and R+B groups, and Ghanaian master drummer Obo Addy, with whom he played the Panafest festival in Ghana. With the Leroy Vinnegar Quartet 1995-1999, he appears on Leroy’s CD Integrity. Besides leading his own groups, he currently appears with big bands led by Carlton Jackson/DaveMills, Rob Scheps, and Gordon Lee; also the Portland Saxophone Quartet, Obo Addy and Kukrudu, and Soul Vaccination.
Judy
Hylton joined the faculty at Clackamas in 1969. Ms. Hylton is past chair of
the Music Department and currently teaches Music Theory I and II. She holds
a B.S.Ed., B.A. Mus., and M.E. from Eastern Washington University and has done
post graduate study at Lewis and Clark College. Her former theory students
include Ron Jones, composer for "Star Trek, The Next Generation".
Ms. Hylton's theory textbooks and MIDI manuals have been used in a number of
high schools and colleges throughout the Northwest. Her Theory students consistently
place in the top music theory and music composition classes when they enter
university music programs after leaving CCC.
Naomi LaVoilette received a Masters of Music in Performance from Portland State University in 2001 and a Bachelors of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Puget Sound in 1998. She currently teaches music courses at Clackamas Community College and Multnomah Bible College and has worked as a piano accompanist for Choral Crossties, the Tacoma Civic Chorus, and the Portland State Opera Theatre program. In addition, Naomi has performed as a harpsichordist, a chamber musician, and soloist. She is also a jazz vocalist / pianist, and performs regularly in the Portland area.
Dave Mills teaches Concert Band, Music Literature, Composition, Arranging, and Finale/MIDI Lab. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Composition and Performance from Westminster College and a Masters Degree in Music Education from Lewis & Clark College. He has also studied string orchestration with Thomas Svoboda at Portland State University. Mr. Mills jazz compositions are published nationally by the University of Northern Colorado Jazz Press and Matrix Publishing Company. He has written many commissions for northwest symphonic bands. In addition he has composed and arranged for many artists including: the horn arrangements on Terry Robb’s nationally released CD “Heart Made of Steel”. Dave also plays trumpet and co-leads one of the top jazz orchestras in the northwest (The Carlton Jackson/Dave Mills Big Band). This band has performed at the Mt. Hood Festival of Jazz, Newport Jazz Festival and with the Oregon Symphony’s “Jazz with Jimmy” concert series.
Gary Nelson has been at Clackamas Community College since 1973. He is a professional
bass trombonist with the Portland Opera Orchestra and has backed numerous nationally
known performers such as Bob Hope, Wayne Newton, Tom Jones, and Sonny and Cher.
He served as Vice President of the Musicians Union, Local 99, in Portland,
and is currently Orchestra Coordinator for the Portland Opera Association.
Nelson is a graduate of Lewis and Clark College.
Eli Reisman teaches Group Guitar and Applied Guitar at CCC. A welcome new
fixture on the Portland jazz scene, Eli has studied with Chuck Israels and
Dan Faehnle. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Jazz Performance from Western
Washington University while employed by the university teaching Jazz Guitar
and directing the 5 O'Clock Jazz Ensemble. While at Western Washington, he
performed/recorded and had his original compositions played by such notables
as Larry Holloway, Michael Allen, Chuck Israels, Willie Thomas, Miles Black,
Julian MacDonough, and many others.
Since relocating to Portland, he has taught guitar lessons at Artichoke Music in South East Portland, and taught privately and in the classroom for Clackamas Community College, as well as performing often with Portland's finest jazz musicians including Renato Caranto, Bob Mover, Stan Bock, Dan Schulte, Steve Christoffersen, Phil Baker, Randy Porter, Tom Wakeling, Tony Pacini, Alan Jones, Tim Rap, and others too numerous to mention.
Brian Rose teaches Audio Engineering, Live Sound Engineering and MIDI/Audio
Sequencing. Brian began piano lessons at age 5, learned brass instruments in
public schools,
and became principal trombonist in the Portland Youth Philharmonic in 1976.
Brian studied music at Clackamas Community College and Portland State University.
He began playing professionally at age 17 and remains a busy and successful
professional musician today.
Brian currently owns and operates Brian Rose Productions, Inc. He composes and produces music for video, film, commercials, multimedia projects, voice overs, video games, and music libraries. Brian's clients include NBC, Weiden & Kennedy (Nike), Will Vinton Productions, Bienvenido (Spanish Cable TV), Dornbecher Children's Hospital, Girl Scouts Columbia Council, and Creative Media Development. In addition he, produces CDs for many bands and musical artists.
Tom
Wakeling, Music Department Chair, directs the CCC Jazz Ensembles, oversees
the Music Technology Programs at CCC, and directs the annual Instrumental Jazz
Festival. Mr. Wakeling, professional bassist, has played with jazz artists
Mel Torme, Arturo Sandoval, Herb Ellis, Mose Allison, Diane Schuur, Ernie Watts,
Pete Christlieb, and the New York Voices, among others. He has also worked
in "show biz" with entertainers such as Rich Little, Della Reese,
the Fifth Dimension, and Red Skelton, and in orchestras for national touring
shows such as Cats and the Joffrey Ballet. Mr. Wakeling has served as a guest
artist at the Stanford University Jazz Workshop (USA), New West (Canada) Jazz
Workshop, and many others. He holds a Masters Degree in Music from the University
of Portland and is on the Artist Roster of the Regional Arts and Culture Council.
Tom's most recent CD, his first as a leader, is entitled "The Tom Wakeling
- Brad Turner Quartet - Live at the Cotton Club". He continues to be a
popular guest artist at music festivals throughout North America.
In addition to outstanding classical vocal and piano faculty, CCC's band and orchestral private lesson instructors include members of the Oregon Symphony and Portland Opera Orchestra.
CCC's Jazz private lesson instructors include many of the leading artist/teachers in the area. Study with teachers such as Paul Mazzio (trumpet), Randy Porter (piano), and Tom Wakeling (bass).
