Viewing Conditions

Local viewing conditions are affected by cloud cover and the moon. Clouds, obviously, block our view of the sky. The light from a full moon can wash out the dim light from a galaxy. The best overall views are when the Moon is less than half full.

Please remember to call the observatory hotline prior to your visit 503-657-6958 ext. LOOK (5665), to make sure we will be open. (During open hours, we can be reached at x2982.)

Check the current Moon phase.

If the skies are clear, we open regardless of the phase of the moon. Be aware that a bright moon makes it difficult to find deep space objects, but we'll do our best! And we've got a good moon filter, so you'll get an excellent, detailed view of the moon's surface.
