Volunteering at Haggart

Haggart Observatory is entirely volunteer-operated; the more volunteers we have, the more events we can support. Whether you are a novice or an expert, we will be glad to have you join us, and we value your assistance!

What we need:
We ask volunteers to be available for 2 viewing events per month (usually Fridays and Saturdays), for at least 6 months. However, we sometimes need help with special projects, so if your schedule does not permit regular assistance at public events, let's discuss what you might like to do! Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

At every viewing event, we need:

  • Tower Telescope Operators (2): Select the evening's featured objects and assist the public in viewing them in the 24" and 13" telescopes.
  • Greeter: helps visitors sign in, explains available activities, collects admission fees

Additional stations we would like to have at every event:

  • Star Walk Guide:
escorts visitors to the field to identify constellations, bright stars, and binocular objects
  • Telescope Coach:
assists visitors in understanding and using telescopes - either their own, or the Observatory's 10" reflector
  • Lakeside Hall Activity Guide:
assists visitors in trying out our various astronomy-related demonstrations and activities in the Hall

How to volunteer:
First, come see what we do! Talk with a volunteer about your expertise and interests. Or, leave us a message by phone or email.

Then, complete the following three forms (sorry about that, but yes, we need them all!):

Give them to one of the volunteers, or mail them to:
Haggart Observatory, attn: Karen Halliday, D119
        Clackamas Community College
19600 Molalla Avenue, Oregon City, OR  97045

We'll add you to our email list; start coming to meetings and events!
