WRITING COORDINATION PROGRAMWR090 | WR095 | WR101 | WR121 | WR122 | WR123 | WR227 The Writing Coordination Program is designed to help instructors and students see the progression of skills covered in each of the writing composition courses. This Program is an attempt to ensure that all sections of each writing course cover the same basic information, adhere to the same definitions of basic writing skills, and work within the same basic grading standards. The English Department encourages creativity and originality in students' topics and styles. Nonetheless, the basic purpose of composition courses is to allow students to develop competent standard written communication skills. Students should be encouraged to use texts, dictionaries, and peer editors to correct inevitable errors. Use of electronic devices such as Spell-Check and Grammar-Check is appropriate if students use them judiciously. Ideally, students who pass each writing course with a C or better should have no major spelling or grammar errors in their final drafts. The Course Outlines and English Department Course Information sheets provide departmental recommendations for assignments, grading, and general course procedures to ensure that exit criteria for one writing course match the entrance criteria for the next course in the sequence. The entrance and exit criteria for each course are minimum expected competencies. As all out-of-class final drafts in WR-121, 122, 123, and 227 must be typed or word-processed, students should become familiar with the computer lab in Streeter Hall. Instructors can make arrangements to meet classes in the lab periodically. The Course Materials Handbooks in Rita Shaw's office provide sample course outlines and syllabi from various instructors. There are several copies for each writing course. Materials in these handbooks may be copied or adapted for use in writing classes. |
