Ask James what he thinks of poetry—especially religious poetry—and
be prepared to hear an answer that's enthusiastic and probably longer
than you wanted. He’ll take you from the ancient Hindu and Hebrew
writings to 12th-century Muslim poets and medieval European mystics
to the contemporary and unclassifiable. “But good writing anywhere—poetry,
novels, student essays—makes my hair tingle. That is, what’s
left of it,” he says. If you can’t find him on campus, try
a Portland playground, where he’ll be trying to keep up with his
children, or a trail in the Columbia Gorge, where he’ll be trying
to keep up with falling water.
