Cougar Volleyball Earns National Academic Recognition

July 27, 2007
Oregon City, Ore. – The Cougars proved their skills on the court this past fall racking up a 41-9 overall record en route to capturing second place at the NWAACC Championships. They have now proven their unwavering commitment to the classroom as well. The team turned in a remarkable combined team GPA of 3.46 over the past three terms and have been awarded the American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) Team Academic Award. The Cougars last received the AVCA’s prestigious academic award in 2003-04.  The Cougars are one of only seven junior college squads to earn the award and the only team J. C. in the Pacific Northwest to do so [view complete list].

Two Cougars were independently recognized for their overall achievements this year as Margo Wyatt and Carley Johnson were awarded athletic scholarships. Wyatt, Clackamas’ Associated Student Government Vice president, was awarded the Clackamas Community College Female Scholar-Athlete Scholarship and Johnson was awarded the Clackamas Community College/Thriftway Scholarship.

Wyatt also received recognition from the State of Oregon when she was one of two students at Clackamas to receive the Oregon Community College Scholarship award this year. The scholarship recognizes both the academic and community relations achievements of nominees.

“Every year we make it our academic goal to achieve at least a 3.33 accumulative GPA for the year,” stated Head Coach Kathie Woods. “This year when we earned the 3.46 GPA, I was very proud that we went so far above our goal. I think this is the highest team GPA I have seen in any of my teams in my 26 years of college coaching. Needless to say I am very proud of the girls and their work in the classroom.”
