Former Putnam star Casey Middagh sets schools records for hits, RBI

By John Denny, Clackamas Review
PORTLAND — Sixth-ranked Clackamas Community College earned second place at the recent NWAACC Championship Softball Tournament, contested at Delta Park May 19-21.

The Cougars won four of six games in the double elimination tournament, losing to Lower Columbia 9-1 in the final, after winning a 13-12 barnburner from Mt. Hood Community College in the semifinals.

In other tournament games, the Cougars topped Edmonds (25-1), South Puget Sound (12-3) and Chemeketa (6-5); and they lost to Lower Columbia 20-7.

The Cougars (26-21, 17-13) advanced to the championship game against Lower Columbia after defeating Mt Hood (13-12) from the loser bracket. Clackamas came to the tournament after placing third — behind Lower Columbia (26-4) and Chemeketa (22-8) — in the NWAACC Southern Division.

Middagh had a stellar career at Clackamas, earning National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American honors two years in a row, and setting schools records this season for total hits (68) and RBIs. Middagh, who hit .400 (68-of-170) also led her team in runs scored (50) and extra base hits (15), with five home runs, four triples and six doubles.

“Casey’s definitely a Division I player,” said CCC coach Paul Fiskum.
Alcala started for the Cougars at first base for the past team seasons. A left-hander, she boasted a .319 batting average, with 33 runs scored and 25 RBI.

Mondragon started all year in right field. She had a .277 batting average, with 33 runs scored and 21 RBI.

Caitlin Ooley, a sophomore from Forest Grove, starred for the Cougars in the NWAACC tournament. The Cougars were trailing Chemeketa 5-3, when she hammered a one-two count, two-out, three-run home run to win the game. Ooley, who had only hit one home run in her career heading into the NWAACC tournament, hit four home runs in the tournament.
