Keoni McHone -
Head Coach
This is the start of Coach McHone’s fifth year as distance coach at Clackamas. Keoni is coming off last season’s strong finishes where his women’s team earned an NWAACC Championship and the men claimed second thus claiming runner-up for the Co-ed Combined title. John Butkey led CCC winning the men’s individual title with the fastest time in NWAACC Cross Country Championship history at 24:55 for 8000 meters. The men also claimed 6th and 9th place individually. Both teams claimed second in 2003 and claimed first place in the Co-ed Combined category showing that CCC is consistently strong on both the men’s and women’s teams. CCC also won the Southern Region Championships for the second year in a row for both men and women with an individual title on the men’s side (John Butkey) showing they were the best community college cross country teams in Oregon.
Coach McHone ended the season with some coach of the year awards. He was voted Southern Region Coach of the Year on the women’s side making this his third time receiving the award. He received the Southern Region Coach of the Year on the men’s side in 2003. Keoni then went on to receive NWAACC Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year after winning the women’s title. This is Coach McHone’s second time he has received the NWAACC Women’s Coach of the Year award.
The track season went well for Coach McHone as he had NWAACC Champions in the men’s 5000 meters and men’s 800 meters. He also had a woman place second in the 1500 meters while running a seven second personal record in the process. Keoni has coached 29 All-American performances between cross country and track and field. He has also coached the school record holders in the women’s 800, men’s discus throw and men’s hammer throw with many other top 10 performances in the distances and throws.
Former athletes of Coach McHone’s have competed for such schools as University of Oregon, Cal State-Long Beach, Western State (Colorado) and many other universities in Oregon and Washington.
Coach McHone got his start coaching the sprints and relays at Western Oregon University (1998 and 1999) where his athletes broke into many of the top ten lists and also set multiple indoor and outdoor relay records. He learned a great deal from John Knight who was inducted into the NAIA Coaching Hall of Fame. Keoni coached many NAIA All-Americans in his two years at WOU before he came to Clackamas. Coach McHone also earned his Masters degree when he was 23 years old where he accomplished his masters thesis study on unilateral versus bilateral squat training and its effects on vertical jumping and sprinting. Keoni still trains hard and can still break into the top 20 nationally for his age group.
