Cougars take three titles; Coach Rhoden gets 174

Forest Grove, Ore. - The afternoon was a good one for Clackamas as the Cougars claimed three titles, two by our wrestlers and one by Head Coach Josh Rhoden. Brian Jacobs went 4-0 to win the combined 125-133 pound bracket and John Bates went 4-0 to capture the heavyweight class. Coach Rhoden, who competed for Pacific University in 2003-04, won the 174 pound class with a 2-1 record and two technical falls. His only loss was a forfeit to Cougar Luis Cisneros.

Cougar Sam Schmitz, the NJCAA's 4th-ranked wrestler, took the day off from action in preparation for the Region 18 Championships at Yakima Valley Community College in Yakima, Wash. next week (Feb10, 10am)

Schmitz in Top Tier of U.S. JC Wrestlers
Has defeated top 149 pounder twice

- Sam Schmitz, a red-shirt freshman from Newberg, Oregon has recently been selected the number four-ranked 149 pound wrestler in the January 24 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) coaches poll.

Schmitz has compiled a 24-6 record this season including two wins over the NJCAA's top-ranked Coby Jones from Northern Idaho College.  Schmitz has a 10-0 record over junior college peers and has been solid over the 4-yr institution opponents with a 14-6 record including multiple wins over PAC-10 schools Oregon, Oregon State, Boise State & Portland State.

 

 


 

Lakers Squeak by Cougars for Region Title

January 26, 2007
Coos Bay, Ore. - The Clackamas Wrestling team finished their long road trip with a dual meet at Southwestern Oregon Community College on Friday. Wrestling for the Oregon Cup and a share of the Region 18 duel meet title, the Cougars came up just short of both honors, losing the duel 24-23. “The guys wrestled hard and competed well. We just came up a couple points short of the win”, said Head Coach Josh Rhoden.

The Cougars (7-4) now share 2nd place in the Region with North Idaho College. “We are going to continue to work hard and make some adjustments. We only have two weeks until the Region 18 Tournament so we have to prepare well”, added Rhoden.

The team wrestles their final dual meet of the season against Pacific University on Saturday February 3 at 2:00 p.m. in Forest Grove. “I am personally looking forward to wrestling Pacific this weekend. They are a very tough bunch which should make it a fun match. I am sure that Coach Miller will have his guys ready.”

Clackamas Dominates Highline 32-18
Cougs prove to be too much for Thunderbirds

Des Moines, WA.
- Clackamas traveled north to the Seattle/Tacoma area Thursday night to compete against the Thunderbirds of Highline Community College. The dual meet, which started at 125lbs, was dominated by the Cougars with exception of a couple of forfeits and two very tight decisions.

Clackamas, now 7-3 in dual meets, won the match 32-18 and secured a winning record for the season. In addition, the Cougars now travel to Coos bay, OR to take on Southwestern Oregon Community College and hope to avenge their November loss to the Lakers.

Jacob takes 3rd at a very tough weight class

Oregon City, Ore.- After what proved to be a very long day for the Cougars on Friday, the wrestlers held their annual open tournament at Clackamas Community College on Saturday.

In action for the Cougs was Brain Jacob (125), Alex Bubb (165), Luis Cisnerois (165), Jim Halicki (197) and John Bates (285). In addition red-shirts: Vance Beeson (133), Luke Injerd (141) and Mike Beeson (149) all competed for the Cougars in the tournament. The highlight for the wrestlers was Brain Jacob who reached the semi final and eventually wound up 3rd on the day. “Brian wrestled fantastic this weekend”. “He went 5-2 on the weekend which was a terrific effort for him”, stated Coach Josh Rhoden. The team went 2-1 on Friday defeating Menlo & Highline C.C. but lost a rematch to North Idaho College. Standouts for the Cougars on Friday were Sam Schmitz (3-0), Seth Roy (3-0) and John Bates (3-0).

Cougars Compete at Portland State Open

Portland, Ore. - Continuing on in a weekend where the Cougars team was decimated by illness, they took even fewer competitors to the PSU Open than they wrestled the day before. The wrestling team took 8 wrestlers and placed 5 of them in the tournament. The team has cancelled the dual meet Friday against North Idaho and is in the process of rescheduling. They are up next at the Oregon Wrestling Classic in Redmond, OR.

Oregon City, Ore. - The Clackamas Community College Cougars held a four team dual meet competition on Saturday which featured Simon Fraser College (B.C.), Douglas College (B.C.), and Yakima Valley C.C. The Cougars went 2-1 on the day despite being overrun with the flu bug. A number of the wrestlers either wrestled with the flu or were out of competition due to illness. Despite being sick the Cougar wrestling team downed Douglas College (36-14) and Yakima Valley (32-15) with the only loss on the day coming at the hands of the grapplers from Simon Fraser University (30-15).

“Our guys wrestled very hard and overcame a tough situation to perform very well.” “It gives us a lot of confidence knowing that even when we are a little down we can still perform”, said Head Coach Josh Rhoden

Couer D’Alene, Id. - The Clackamas Community College wrestling team traveled to North Idaho College Thursday to take on the NJCAA 5th-ranked Cardinals in their second league dual. In what was a very exciting match the Cougars needed a win by decision to secure a tie and a major decision for the outright dual meet victory. In the final match of the afternoon Alex Bubb (CCC) won by decision to achieve a tie and an eventual win by criterion.

According to rule 4 section 12 of the NCAA rules, when two teams finish in a tie the winner of the match shall be determined by criterion. In this situation criterion A states that the team with the most victories, wins the dual meet. “The guys wanted the win bad,” said Head Coach Josh Rhoden. “We have been working very hard and we wanted the victory,” he added.

The Cougars, who gave up two forfeits in the match, wrestled their way back into contention with some very impressive victories. “John Bates really got things going with a big win over over current NJCAA 5th-ranked Robbie Shaw at 285 lbs. From there on we didn’t lose a match excluding the forfeit at 141 lbs," stated Rhoden. At 149 lbs, Sam Schmitz found himself up against returning All-American and current NJCAA 4th-ranked Coby Jones. In what was a very exciting match Sam won a hard fought victory. “The win was a great one for Sam and the team, it really pumped up our guys," exclaimed Rhoden.

"We are looking forward to wrestling them again in Oregon City next month.” The next meeting between the two squads is January 12 at Clackamas Community College.

Yakima, Wa. - The Cougar Wrestling team, high on a victory in Idaho, traveled straight to Yakima, Washington for an evening meeting with the Yaks of Yakima Valley. The Cougar Wrestling Team won the match going away. “From the first whistle to the last we came to wrestle and it really showed," said Coach Rhoden. The dual started at 125 lbs with Brian Jacob picking up the 11-4 victory and it was really all Cougars after that. “I was glad to see that the guys weren’t effected by the long drive over. They stepped out and really got after it.” The Cougars will face Yakima at home and will see their next action after the New Year on January the 6th in the CCC Duals.

Best of the West Results
Cougars compete with top programs in NW

November 18, 2006
Central Point, OR. - the Cougar Men’s Wrestling team traveled to Southern Oregon to compete in the ever tuff Best of the West Open. The tournament is hosted by Southern Oregon University and is one of the toughest tournaments that the wrestlers compete in. Teams from all over the west come to compete in the single day event.

Leading the way for the Cougar’s was Sam Schmitz (149 lbs). In route to the semi-final appearance and a 3 rd place finish Schmitz downed Trevor Tangle (OSU), Nathan Shay ( Pacific University) and Jeremy McLaughlin (U of O). This was Sam’s chance to showcase his talent on a very high level and he performed incredibly, said Head Coach Josh Rhoden. Sam went 5-1 on the day with some very exciting victories. Also making the semi-final for the Cougars was Brian Jacob (125 lbs). Brian ended the day in a tie for 5th place at the BOTW. I felt like Brian had a really good day overall, added Rhoden. Brain went 3-2 on the day and fought thru being sick on Saturday and still wrestled well.

Next Matches: Clackamas will have Thanksgiving Break off and pick up next in Couer d’Alene, ID at North Idaho College on December 14th for a dual meet that will start the Northwest road trip for the Cougs. They follow up with a dual at Yakima Valley C.C. and then add a quadrangular Dual meet in Tacoma, WA to finish up the road trip on December 15th. [View Schedule]

John Bates Runner-up in heavyweight class

Forest Grove - Clackamas heavyweight Jon Bates went 3-1 on the day for the Cougars to finish in second place at the Mike Clock Open Sunday. Bates wrestled Pacific University wrestler Kory Pratt to an 11-6 decision to open the tournament with a win. In the quarterfinal match Bates beat Southwestern Oregon C.C. wrestler Olin Howlett by Technical Fall. He went on to beat unattached Oregon State wrestler Brennan Olander by major decision 14-6 before dropping a close finals match 4-3 to Arjan Bullar ( Simon Fraser University) 4-3.

In addition to Bates three other Clackamas wrestlers reached the semi-final matches. Brian Jacob (125 lbs) dropped a tough fought match to eventual champion Richy Zuniga (SWOCC) 4-3 and finished in 4th place. Seth Roy (157 lbs) lost to eventual champ Tim Patrick unattached (OSU) in double overtime 10-8 and finished in 3rd place. The other wrester placing in the tournament for the Cougars was Derick Bartlemay (149 lbs) unattached placing 4th.

Oregon City - The Cougars are looking to greatly improve on the 16th place finish of a year ago. The new look Cougars start the season with a new staff, a few familiar faces, and a solid class of recruits. This is Coach Rhoden’s first season with the Cougars as Head Coach and he has brought with him some very talented athletes. This includes former Oregon State Champions Derick Bartlemay (Sprague HS), Robert Nickerson (Coquille HS) and Runner-ups Shane Rhoden (Crook County HS) and Ben Williams (Banks HS). In addition, other top recruits include 3x state placer Trent Conant (Newberg HS) and 2x state placer Luke Injerd (Hillsboro HS).

Key returnees for Clackamas this year are Seth Roy (Region XVIII Runner-up) and Alex Bubb (4th in Region XVIII). Both wrestlers competed at the NJCAA National Championships last season and look to gain All-American status this season. In addition, the Cougars will be looking for great things from red-shirt freshman Brian Jacob (Tillamook HS), Sam Schmitz (Newberg HS), Luis Cisneros (Nyssa HS) and Jon Bates (Oregon City HS). The Cougars are working hard to get themselves into position to earn Regional and National Recognition

Coach Rhoden Hauls in a Stellar Class

New Cougar Head Coach Josh Rhoden hasn’t wasted any time in corralling talent from around the state to restock the roster for 2006-07. This year’s class brings in eight wrestlers who finished state in the top four, including three state runner-ups and one former champion.

Josh Rhoden Takes Helm of Cougars

Josh RhodenThis is Josh’s inaugural season as Head Coach for the Cougars, but he is not new to the program. A product of Crook County High School, Josh was a standout at Clackamas C.C. during the 2000-01 season, taking 3rd at the regional’s and a top 10 finish at national’s under former Cougar Head Coach Lloyd Martindale.

Josh’s successful freshman season at CCC lead to a collegiate career with Pacific Lutheran University for his sophomore campaign. Josh became a dominating NCAA Division III 174-pounder, winning conference champion twice, was named the 2003 Northwest Wrestling Championships Most Outstanding Wrestler and qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships. The Cougars finished tied with Rochester Community and Technical College with 32.5 points for 16th place overall.. The Cougars also earned All-Academic with the highest team grade point average in the tournament.
