Cougars take 7th in National Tournament
Cougars have another solid performance on National stage!

February 23, 2008
Rochester, MN - The Clackamas Community College wrestling team competed at the National Junior College Championships this past weekend.

Of the 8 qualifiers the Cougars sent to the Championships they returned with 3 All-Americans. Sophomore 285 pounder John Bates (Oregon City HS) was the National Runner-up for the Cougars and the first finalist since Glen Garrison in 1997.

“John wrestled an amazing tournament and I could not be prouder of him and his accomplishments,” exclaimed Head Coach Josh Rhoden.

Bates is now a 2-time wrestling All-American for CCC and was also honored with a second selection to the Academic All-American Team.

Also earning the All-American honors were sophomore 133-pounder Vance Beeson (Eagle HS, Idaho) and sophomore 141-pounder Derick Bartlemay (Sprague HS, OR) each finishing in 4th place respectively.

“Vance wrestled a great tournament and has worked hard this year to get to where he is”, said Rhoden.

Bartlemay finished his time at CCC as a 2-time Wrestling All-American and was also honored as an Academic All-American for the Cougars this season.

“I am very proud of the way Derick competed this weekend…his weight class was talked about as being one of the toughest at the tournament”, added Rhoden.

With 57 points, the Cougars led all Region 18 teams taking 7th place in the Division I, scholarship division, and 9th overall. The region's next best team showing was North Idaho, who finished a distant 13th place (15th overall) with 34.5 points.

“The team wrestled very well as a whole and we were very proud of the effort they put forth”, said Rhoden. “It was nice to out place all of the teams that beat us this season in dual meets and it was great to beat North Idaho.”

This is the first season that Clackamas Community College has both beaten North Idaho in a dual meet and out placed them at the National Championships.

In addition to this, six Cougar Wrestlers were selected to the Academic All-American Team. As a team Clackamas CC finished 4th in the academic team competition. “This is a great testament to the job being done here at Clackamas by the assistant coaches and support staff here at the college."

2008 Region 18 ChampionshipsRegion 18 Championships

February 10, 2008

Oregon City, Ore. - The Cougars had high expectations heading in to Saturday's tournament but fell just short of the team award for 2nd place. The annual tournament is a qualifier for the NJCAA National Championships for the Region.

Taking the top two honors were North Idaho College of Coeur d’Alene, ID (152 ½ pts) and Southwestern Oregon C.C. (117 pts) from Coos Bay, OR. The Cougars as a team finished in 3rd with 114 points.

“We just came up short of what we wanted to do as a team," said Coach Josh Rhoden. Clackamas will be sending seven qualifiers to the NJCAA National Championships this year, one better than the number they qualified last year.

“It looked like things were going pretty well early on,” added Rhoden. Rhoden is referring to the Cougars six championshipfinalists and two consolation finalists on the day. The Cougars went one and one in the Consolation finals getting Stephan Gonzales (157 lbs) to the National Tournament.

John Bates repeats as the Region 18 285 pound championIn each of the six finals matches, Clackamas was pitted against wrestlers from North Idaho College. Clackamas had expectations of at least winning half of those matches, but only heavyweight John Bates succeeded. “It was the most frustrating thing to have to sit and watch because we have beaten them in four of those weights this year,” said Rhoden. “North Idaho just came out fired up and ready to go. All I can say is this will help us stay focused and hard at work for the next two weeks."

Rhoden was selected the Region 18 coach of the year.  This is Rhoden's second season at the helm of the Cougar wrestling program.

National Qualifiers for Clackamas were 133-Vance Beeson (2nd); 141-Derick Bartlemay (2nd); 149-Mike Beeson (2nd); 157-Stephan Gonzales (3rd); 165-Kris Spencer (2nd); 184- Richard Jensen (2nd); and 285-John Bates (Champion). [View Full Results]

30 Years of coaching - Former Cougar coaches are honoredClackamas honors the past: Prior to the finals matches, Coach Rhoden introduced each of the previous coaches of the Clackamas C.C. wrestling program in honor of their dedication to the program. In attendance and presenting awards for the Cougars (in chronological order) were: Coach Larry Wright, Coach Norm Berney, Coach Jim Jackson, Coach Mike Haluska, and Coach Lloyd Martindale.

“It was so great to be able to have these guys here and for me to be able to honor them was an honor,” said Rhoden. “I mean these are the guys who laid the foundation for those of us who are here at Clackamas now.”
