Keoni McHone :: Head Coach
Coach McHone just finished his eighth season coaching at Clackamas. He has been the Head Cross Country Coach for eight years and the Head Track and Field Coach for two. Keoni has continued a strong cross country and track and field tradition at CCC. His men’s cross country teams have placed in the top three five of the last seven years under his leadership at the NWAACC Championships, and his women’s teams have won two NWAACC Championships, a second place and a third place finish.
Coach McHone’s 2003 teams were the Co-ed Combined Champions showing they were the best overall cross country program for all community colleges in Oregon and Washington. He has also coached three individual champions in cross country. John Butkey, the 2004 NWAACC Champion, has the fastest time in NWAACC Cross Country Championship history at 24:55 for 8000 meters. CCC has finished first or second at the Southern Region Championships for the last five years showing they are consistently one of the best community college distance programs in Oregon. Coach McHone has been awarded two NWAACC Coach of the Year awards and six Southern Region Coach of the Year awards.
Coach McHone has also had great success coaching track and field. He began his career at CCC coaching the throws. Since then, he has had many NWAACC Champions and All-Americans. He has also coached 31 of the top ten performances in the throws, distances and hurdles. His throws athletes have gone on to such accomplishments as throwing 195’ in the men’s discus (ranked 12 th in the country that year for all levels), two have competed at the NCAA Division I Championships, and Pac-10 runner-up in the men’s hammer.
Former athletes of Coach McHone’s have competed for such schools as University of Oregon, Long Beach State, Western State ( Colorado), University of Wyoming and many other universities in Oregon and Washington.
Coach McHone got his start coaching the sprints and relays at Western Oregon University (1998 and 1999) as a graduate student where the sprinters broke into many of the top ten lists and also set multiple indoor and outdoor relay records. The men’s 4 x 100 record still stands at 40.90, and the women’s record still stands at 47.72.
Coach McHone also earned his Masters degree when he was 23 years old where he accomplished his masters thesis study on unilateral versus bilateral squat training and its effects on vertical jumping, squat strength and sprinting.
Gary Reddaway :: Javelin
Gary has been coaching the javelin for Clackamas for a little over 16 years. He coached Cougar women's record holder, Trina Rogers, who threw 169’5” finishing 8th at the 2000 Olympic Trials and was a top eight placer at the NCAA Championships while competing for Boise State. Gary has coached every man on Clackamas' top ten list that starts at 237’7” and ends at 200’6”.
He had a great javelin coaching year last spring where he had two NWAACC Champions. Mike Simmons’ throw of 224’ put him on the USATF national list, and Jeeni Schantin’s 164’10” qualified her for the USATF Outdoor National Championships where she went on to place 17th.
Gary is still extremely competitive at a personal level in the javelin having competed at the World Masters Track and Field Championships finishing as high as 3rd in his age group. He works with many of the top javelin coaches in the United States developing javelin throwers.
Rick Baggett :: Pole Vault
Coach Baggett has been coaching many years and has coached numerous high level pole vaulters. He coached Becky Holliday who jumped 14'4" while at Clackamas. She now represents New Balance and travels the world competing in the vault. Tommy Skipper was coached by Rick Baggett while he was in high school. He is also the originator of the Willamette Striders Track Club that has an indoor training facility just a half mile from the Clackamas campus. Coach Baggett has coached every athlete on the top ten list for Clackamas.
Ian Schroeder :: Distance
Ian’s coaching career started in the fall of 2002 at La Grande High School during his red-shirt season at Eastern Oregon University. Ian was the head Cross Country Coach and helped guide the men’s team to a first place finish in the Greater Oregon District and the women’s team to a second place finish qualifying both teams for the 3A Oregon State Cross Country Championship Meet at Lane Community College. This was the first time in school history the women’s program made it to the state meet and only the second time for the men. The men placed 9 th and the women 14 th, while two men and one woman received All-State honors. Since then Ian has been the Assistant Cross Country coach with the very successful Eastern Oregon University program in the Fall of 2005 and volunteered his time to help out with Rex Putnam’s Cross Country team for the 2006 season and was in charge of the varsity men distance runners during 2007 track season. Ian has also organized and directed youth track camps through the North Clackamas Parks and Recreation department in 2000 and 2001.
Before his coaching career Ian ran for Rex Putnam High School where he competed at six state meets between Cross Country and Track. He then continued his running career at Eastern Oregon University where the Cross Country team finished in the top ten for the NAIA national championships all four seasons he competed for the Mountaineers. For EOU Ian was a 5-time Academic All-American, 2004 NAIA Cross Country All-American, and a 2005 NAIA indoor 1,000 meter All-American. Ian was also a scorer for the Mountaineers outdoor national squad in the 1,500 meters for the 2003 and 2005 season.
Currently, Ian is substitute teaching and working at Fit Right Northwest, a running specialty store in Portland and Vancouver.
Dan Barley :: Hammer, Discus, Shot put
Coach Barley comes to Clackamas with six years of collegiate coaching experience. He is a certified USATF Level One and NWAACC coach. He has coached four NWAACC champions and two community college school record holders. He has had different women throw 163’1” in the hammer, 144’9” in the javelin and 140’10” in the discus. Coach Barley’s efforts have resulted in 16 NWAACC All-Americans as well as on two occasions his athletes scored over 50 points at the NWAACC Championships.
On a personal competition level, Coach Barley is the school record holder in the hammer throw at Linn-Benton Community College, was an NAIA All-American in the hammer and weight throw while at Western Oregon University. He also has a personal best of 204’0” in the hammer.
Coach Barley is just about to receive his masters degree in mathematics from Oregon State University. He is currently a math instructor at Chemeketa Community College and has taught classes at Clackamas as well.
Kevin Arizo :: Athletic Trainer
Kevin graduated from Pacific University 2003 with an Exercise Science major with an emphasis in Sports Medicine. Upon graduation, Kevin took on several trainer roles in the metro area. He was an assistant trainer with the Portland Timbers during the 2003-05 seasons and in 2006 he became the head athletic trainer for the club. He has also worked for North Lake Physical Therapy clinic in Lake Oswego as an athletic trainer since 2003 and and for Lake Oswego High School as the school's trainer.
