Clackamas finished the season strong with 20 NWAACC All-Americans (top 3 performance), 19 lifetime or season personal records, 5 performances that made the top ten lists, and 1 school record. The Cougars competed at the NWAACC Championships this past weekend in Spokane, WA.
One of the highlights of the meet was Morgan Cribbs' 200 meter race. Morgan was on the outside lane of the favorite to win who had run 24.81 during the year. When the gun went off, Cribbs and Spokane's Chanel James were pretty even coming off the turn. James put in a little surge to take a one step lead on Cribbs, but that was short lived as Cribbs came back a half step. Then they battled all the way to the finish where Morgan was able to out lean James for the win. Morgan came away from that race with a personal record by 0.80 seconds with a time of 24.61, the NWAACC meet record and the school record for Clackamas. The old school record had stood for 29 years.
Many other sprinters had impressive performances. Logan Fjelstad ran a 0.14 second lifetime PR in the 100 to finish second, which was well above where he ran ranked going into the meet. Joseph Gobel was impressive as well competing well in the 100 and 200 after a grueling decathlon training season. Stefani Dittmar fulfilled her utility athlete role of anchoring the 2nd place women's 4 x 100 meter relay, 4th in the 100 in a personal record time of 12.46, 8th in the 200, and 9th place in the hammer throw which kept another team from scoring in that event.
Stan Wester was also strong by ending up three places higher than what he was ranked in the 110 meter high hurdles and 400 meter intermediate hurdles. Wester's time of 54.66 is the 9th fastest in school history. Mat Tweedy ran a gutsy 48.6 second anchor leg for the 4 x 400 meter relay almost catching a former high school state champion from Washington.
The distances were impressive with Andria Scheese battling her way to 3rd in the 800 and 4th in the 1500. The men's steeple chasers had three of the top eight spots in that event. Daniel Alvarez showed determination by earning a third spot in the 10,000 meters as well as seventh in the 5,000 meters. The women's throws were led by Sierra Hess who was 3rd in the discus (128'8") and 4th in the javelin. Luke Pike threw a personal record of two feet to earn him 6th place in the hammer.
It was a great meet for the Cougars where they stepped it up and met their expectations and more. The season produced many personal records as well at 15 performances that made the all-time top ten lists for Clackamas.
