Cougs Split at LCC - Win DH Over Clark
Cougars forced to settle for 2nd in South Region
May 12, 2007
Oregon City , Ore. - The Cougars did it's best to take care of business in the last four games of the season for a shot at the prestigious South Region title.
Winning three of the last four wasn't enough, however.
Even if Clackamas had swept the series against Lower Columbia and Clark, the Mt. Hood Saints were the only team truly in control of their own destiny. And the Saints took care of business with sweeps of Chemeketa in Salem on Friday and today against Lower Columbia in Gresham.
At Lower Columbia in game one, Renee Santos and the Cougars lost a heartbreaker when the Red Devils broke a 0-0 dead-lock with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The second game went to the Cougars as Janelle Cristofaro held the Devils to just three hits in a 4-0 shutout.
On Saturday, the Cougars unleashed on the Clark Penguins, winning the double header by a combined score of 38-1. Renee Santos picked up her 20th win on the season and Janelle Cristofaro won her 14th. Cristofaro also had a career high 14 strikeouts as a Cougar. Clackamas racked up 11 home runs in the two games led by Cristofaro, Santos, Sam Daline, Jessica Slocum and Christa Ritt with two apiece and one by Kelsey Hinds. Santos' home runs were noteworthy since she has only seven at-bats on the season. The 2007 Cougars have now increased the previous home run record of 31, set in 2005 and matched in 2006, to 52 going into the playoffs. [2007 final regular season stats]

Santos throws no-hitter - hits the 300K milestone
May 08, 2007
Oregon City , Ore. - Renee Santos has been dominate this season for the Cougars. On Tuesday, she reminded the Lakers as she pitched a no-hitter while dishing out 12 strikeouts in a 8-0 Cougar win. Santos also hit a huge pitching milestone of 300 strikeouts during the contest, increasing her Cougar single season record to 302 [see records].
Santos had plenty of teammate support at the plate as four Cougars hit for .500 or better. Lacy Forbito and Janelle Cristofaro both launched home runs; Cristofaro's was a walk-off homer to end the game on the 8-run rule in the sixth.
The Lakers posed a potential problem for Clackamas in the second game when they tied the contest in the top of the fourth 1-1. The Cougars answered quickly, however, scoring eight in the next three innings off home runs by Christa Ritt, Kelsey Hinds and Jessica Slocum. Ritt got the rally rolling in the bottom of the fourth inning when she ripped a three-run homer that landed twenty feet over the fence.
Jessica Schell batted a prefect game going 4-4 at the plate with a double and Janelle Cristofaro went the distance on the mound, for her 12th win on the season, holding the Lakers to just one hit.
The top-ranked Cougars are still in the hunt for the Southern Region Championship, but remain in third place, a half game behind Mt Hood and Lower Columbia [standings].

Chemeketa Tops Cougs in Doubleheader
May 05, 2007
Salem, Ore. - It was Chemeketa's day in Salem as the Storm edged the Cougars in two close games Saturday. The Storm jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the third inning, but the Cougs battled back over the next three innings to knot the game at 3 all. Chemeketa added 2 more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a game winning 5-3 lead.
Game two had the Cougars up 2-0 in the top of the third, but the Storm scored two in the third and forth to tie the game 2-2. Chemeketa got hot in the bottom of the sixth again and pulled out the win 5-2.
The losses drop the top-ranked Cougars into third place in the ever-so-tight Southern Region competition. The Mt Hood Saints are now a game and half ahead of the Cougars with Lower Columbia a half game up.
The Cougars (17-6, 29-9) host the Southwestern Oregon Lakers (4-20, 9-29) for a doubleheader on May 8th at 3pm.

Cougars - Red Devils Split Doubleheader
May 01, 2007
Oregon City , Ore. - It was a match-up of perennial NWAACC softball titans. The Cougars and Lower Columbia Red Devils have won 16 of the last 18 NWAACC championships, winning eight apiece. The Cougars last won it in 2005 and were runner-up to the Devils last season.
Game one was a pitching duel between Renee Santos and the Devils' Carrie O'Neil. The Cougars gained a run lead in the second, but the Devils tied the contest in the top of the seventh on a solo home run. Clackamas rallied in the bottom of the seventh off of clutch hitting by several Cougs including Christa Ritt, who's RBI single tied the game and a Cotie Howard RBI single to win the game 3-2.
In the second game, the Devils found their bats in the second inning and came up with seven runs to put the Cougars into a deficit they didn't recover from. Down 13-1 in the fifth, Clackamas was forced to rally to avoid losing the contest on the 8-run rule. The Cougars loaded the bases and Katie King nailed an O'Neil pitch for a grand slam, King's 6th homer of the season, but the rally fell short in a 13-5 Cougar loss.

Cougars Weather Storm; Improve to 27-5
April 28, 2007
Oregon City , Ore. - The Cougars took on a quality Chemeketa Storm squad (21-12) Saturday and was able to improve their position in the South Region standings.
Renee Santos, still feeling soreness in her pitching arm, dominated the Storm batters for six innings racking up another 16 strikeouts, before taking relief from Janelle Cristofaro in the seventh. Storm pitcher Stephanie Albrecht did a good job holding the Cougar bats in check after a five run second inning. Sophomore Jessica Schell had a home run in a 6-3 Cougar win.
Clackamas drove in two runs in the opening inning of game two, but Chemeketa answered in the top of the second with two runs to knot the contest 2-2. Janelle Cristofaro held the Storm scoreless the rest of the way. The Cougars tallied the winning run off Storm pitcher Chelsea Bradely in the fifth to secure a 3-2 victory.

Cougars Win Doubleheader over Lakers
Renee Santos Breaks Cougar Strikeout Record
April 27, 2007
Oregon City , Ore. - The Southwestern Oregon Lakers have had a tough season in 2007. The Clackamas Cougars didn't make things much easier for the struggling Lakers. The Cougars dispatched the Lakers in only 8 total innings of Cougar at-bats for the doubleheader.
Renee Santos broke the Cougar single season record for strikeouts with 9K in only 4 1/3 innings of work allowing a single hit before she was relieved due to a sore pitching arm. Janelle Cristofaro finished the contest in a rare relief role. The Cougar bats drummed up eight runs in the first two innings led by Sam Daline on 2-3 hitting to capture an 8-0 victory.
Santos now has 224 strikeouts breaking the previous season high of 223 held by Cougar pitching stalwart Holly Marlow from the 2004-05 Cougar squads. Marlow stills holds the career mark of 440 for Clackamas.
Game two was all but decided when the Cougars held a 10-0 lead in the first inning. Cristofaro (10-2) brought her stuff and held the Lakers to just one hit in a shut-out for the sophomore. The Cougar bats supplied plenty of support as Jessica Schell, Sam Daline, Katie King, Cristofaro, and Lacy Forbito all batted over .600.
Cristofaro is now at 25-11 overall in her Clackamas pitching career and is in the Cougar record-book at 8th for career wins.

Cougs - Saints Split Decision
April 25, 2007
Gresham, Ore. - It was a match-up of two of the best teams in the NWAACC and a battle for first place in the Southern Region.
In the first game, the Cougars and Saints were knotted after the first 3-3. Clackamas then took control the third inning, extending a 4-3 lead to 9-3 on a five run rally. The Saints rallied to score four more over the last three innings, but couldn't keep pace with the Cougars in a 11-7 win.
Renee Santos (13-3) notched 15 strikeouts to boost her season total to 215. Averaging 14+ strikeouts per game, she will likely break the Cougar record of 223 in her next start. Sam Daline and Heather Rightly led the Cougar offense on 4-5 hitting. Cotie Howard maintained her .500+ batting average with a 2-3 hitting performance.
Game two of the double header didn't go as well for the Cougs. Saint pitcher Meghan Gendron was on her game holding the powerful Cougar bats to only 3 runs on 6 hits. With a 3-3 tie going into the fifth inning, Janelle Cristofaro held the Saints scoreless over the next four innings.
Cristofaro pitched herself out of a huge problem in the eighth when the Saints loaded the bags with no outs. Three consecutive Saints batters grounded out to send the game into the ninth inning.
In near darkness to start the ninth, Clackamas got a few runners on in the top of the inning, but failed to capitalize with a score. Mt. Hood rallied in the bottom of the inning and scored the game winning run off a bunt in a 4-3 Cougar loss.
Lacey Forbito led the Cougars bats on 2-3 hitting.
With the split, the Cougars maintain a game and half lead over the Saints in the South Region.
The Cougars (11-2, 23-5) play host the Southwestern Oregon Lakers (0-12, 5-21) at Clackamas for a doubleheader Friday, April 27th at 3pm.

Slippery Weather Bad for Cats
Santos reaches 200K Milestone
April 24, 2007
Longview, WA. - The contest started out dry, but a light sprinkle began to kick-in around the fourth inning with Clackamas up 1-0. In the top of the sixth, the drizzle turn to rain causing pitching problems for Red Devil pitcher Carri O'Neil as the ball began to get slippery. The Cougs rallied to drive in two more runs off O'Neil to take a 3-0 lead.
The rain took a turn for the worst in the bottom to the sixth and freshman Renee Santos (16K), who had been dominating, struggled to keep a firm grip on the slick ball. The Devils got a few runners on and took advantage of the situation with a three-run homer to knot the game at 3-3.
As the rain subsided, the tie continue into extra innings until the Devils won the contest on a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 8th.
Game two began dry, but was quickly postponed by the coaches in the second inning with the Cougars up 3-0 when another down-pour set-in. The match will be continued at a later date.
The loss snaps Clackamas' 15-game win streak. With her 16 strikeouts, Santos has reached a significant 200K milestone on the season, 23 behind Cougar record-holder Holly Marlow.

Cougs Win 2 More at NWAACC Crossover
April 22, 2007
Wenatchee, WA. - Once again, the Cougars' potent offense combined with superb pitching produced two more wins at the NWAACC Cross-over Tournament Sunday.
In game one, Renee Santos pitched another amazing 17 strikeout performance holding the third-ranked Bellevue Bulldogs to 5 runs on three hits. Cougar batters had field day at the plate hitting 6 homers and two doubles in a 9-5 win. Kelsey Hinds ripped two shots out of the park, with Cotie Howard, Sam Daline, Katie King and Jessica Schell also clearing the fences. King and Schell also had doubles in the contest. For King, it was her third home run on the weekend.
With her 33 strikeouts this weekend, Santos has a NWAACC leading 184 strikeouts (3rd all-time Cougars) and is rapidly approaching the Cougar record of 223 set by Holly Marlow in 2004. Marlow also had 217 in 2005. (see Cougar records)
The Cougs took on Highline in game two with Janelle Cristofaro on the mound. Janelle held the Thunderbirds to just one run on three hits in a nine strikeout performance. The Cougars were forced to manufacture their seven runs in this contest as the Highline pitcher managed to keep the ball in play all game. Daline and King highlighted the Cougar offense with two singles apiece in a 7-1 win.
With the wins, Clackamas improves to 22-3 on the season.

Cougars Roll At SW Oregon
Santos mows down Laker batters, tallying 28ks
April 10, 2007
Coos Bay, Ore. Prior to yesterday's contest in Southern Oregon, the most strike outs by a Clackamas C.C. pitcher was 14. In game one against the Lakers, Cougar pitcher Rene Santos continued her brilliance on the mound and smashed the school record by retiring 18 Laker batters on strikeouts.
“It was total domination”, said Head Coach Jessica Farnsworth. “The SWOCC girls were swinging but had no idea where the ball was”.
When asked about the feat, Associate Head Coach Paul Fiskum said, “What do you say about something like that…it’s amazing”.
Santos not only picked up the game one win as the Cougars beat the Lakers 5-1, she also had an incredible 10 strikeouts in relief of Janelle Cristofaro, who carried the team into the fifth inning. Santos now has a league leading 126 strike-outs on the season.
Additionally, game one saw both Cotie Howard and Katie King go 2-4 at the plate for the Cougars.
In game 2 the Cougs beat the Lakers in what was somewhat of a sloppy game in a 7-6 decision. Cristofaro went 3-3 at the plate to help carry the Cougs. In addition to Cristofaro’s success, Heather Rightley (2-3), Cotie Howard (2-4) and Samantha Daline (2-3) enjoyed a good game at the plate.

Cougars Go 4-2 on Arizona Trip
April 02, 2007
Oregon City, Ore - The Clackamas Community College women’s softball team went on their annual southwest swing over spring break. The Cougars played a total of 6 games against 3 different Arizona community college squads from March 25th through March 28th.
In game 1 of a double header against South Mountain CC it took CCC only 5 innings to earn 12 runs on 10 hits. Clackamas’ wining pitcher Renee Santos tallied 8 strikeouts in the contest en route to a shutout victory. In Game 2 the Cougars lost a tight contest in the bottom of the 7th inning 3-2. Cotie Howard had a huge day at the plate where she was an incredible 5-8.
The very next day the Cougars faced Gateway CC in their second double header in as many days. The Cougars won both with 4-0 and 4-1 scores. Renee Santos threw her second shutout of the trip and tallied 10 strikeouts on her way to a no-hitter, to get the Cougars off to a good start. The second game of the day saw the Cougars get a come from behind victory. After trailing through four innings, the Cougars tied the game in the top of the 5th and sealed the win with three-runs in the top of 7th inning.
In the final set of games, CCC went 1-1 against Glendale CC with a close 4-3 loss in the first game of the double header. Clackamas batters had a great day against the Glendale team with a total of 25 hits in the two games. The second game saw the Cougars explode on the Glendale pitching for 15 hits, 14 runs, with 6 Cougars batting .500 or better for the game.
Coach Paul Fiskum remarked, “This is a great trip for the girls who not only get to play but enjoy the sunshine.” Additionally, Coach Fiskum pointed out that the teams two losses were both by only a one run margin and said, “we could have won either one of those games.”
