Clackamas drop pair at home to LCC
Cougars will enter NWAACC Tournament as South third seed

May 09, 2008
Oregon City - The Cougars turned in a good performances against the third-ranked Red Devils but fell short in both games of a double header at home Friday.  Lower Columbia took a 3-1 the advantage after two innings and the Cougars answered to regain the lead 5-3 in the fifth, but the Devils collected another pair of runs in the sixth and seventh to cap a 6-5 come-from-behind win.

Renee Santos added to her school strikeout record by sitting down thirteen LCC batters. She now has over 670 strikeouts during her Clackamas career,

230 more than any other pitcher to suit up for the Cougars.

Susan Winningham and Kristel Baeckel went 2-3 at the plate, each hitting a homer to lead the Cougar bats.  Winningham's batting performance thus far this season places her tied for first in home runs (11) and second in doubles (16) in the Cougar record books. Baeckel, with seven dingers this season, is now tied for fourth all time.

The Devils took a three run lead in the third inning of game two and the Cougars could only manage a run in the sixth in a 3-1 loss.

Ashley Roy and Danyel Craycraft both collected a pair of hits in the loss.

The Cougars (15-13, 22-21) will enter the NWAACC Softball Championship Tournament as the South number three seed behind Mt Hood and Lower Columbia.

In 2006, the Cougars entered the tournament with a very similar record  of 17-13 in the South, 23-19 overall, but took home the second place trophy behind gutsy, smart play that is a hallmark of Cougar softball.

Clackamas will take on Clark College in their final regular season double header in Vancouver at 12pm on Saturday, May 10th.

Cougars sweep Chemeketa
Santos sets new school record of 40 career wins

May 03, 2008

Renee Santos and the Storm's Chelsea Bradely had a pitching duel going through the first six inning as both teams were held scoreless.  Santos kept the Storm off the board in the seventh and the Clackamas offense manufactured a run when Kristel Baeckel scored off a Danyel Craycraft RBI single to secure a 1-0 win.

Santos pitched a three-hit, 15 strikeout shutout to tie the school record of 39 wins set by Holly Marlow in 2005.  The Cougar bats were led by Baeckel who went 2-3 with a double and Ashley Roy, Mallory Callahan and Ashley Gardner who each had singles.  Gardner's single was instrumental in advancing Baeckel into scoring position in the seventh.

Game two was a hit feast by both clubs as 22 hits and 11 runs were generated in the contest.  The Storm jumped out to a 1-0 in first, but the Cougars tied it in the second. The game was again tied at 4-4 after five and remain scoreless until the top of the ninth when Chemeketa picked up a run the take the lead.  The Cougars answered in the bottom on the ninth when Susan Winningham drove in Tara DeVeny on an RBI double and Taya Clark singled to score Winningham for a 6-5 win.

All three Cougar pitchers took the mound with Emily Kenagy pitching the first 3 /13, Ashley Bjork the next 1 2/3 and Santos closing it out for her 15th win of the season.  The win also gave Santos her 40th career win to set the new school record.

Several Cougars had good performances games at the plate led by Clark who went 3-5.  Baeckel, Gardner, Callahan and Brianne Rowley all had a pair of hits.  Gardner doubled and Baeckel nailed her 6th homer of the season.

With the wins, the Cougars (14-10, 21-18) have a firm hold on third place in the South, four games ahead for fourth place Chemeketa (10-14) with three doubleheaders remaining. The Cougars still have series with SW Oregon in Coos Bay, Lower Columbia at home and finish the season at Clark.

Clackamas drops pair at Chemeketa

April 26, 2008

Salem, OR - Chemeketa (8-10, 18-14) gained two valuable divisional wins over the third place Cougars (8-8, 15-16) in Saturday's doubleheader in Salem as the Storm try to remain in playoff contention in the South.  The top four teams from each region advance to the NWAACC Tournament in May.

Chemeketa got out to a 5-0 lead after four innings as pitcher Renee Santos suffered a rare case of inconsistency.  All-in-all, she did strikeout nine batters, but another eleven got on base without putting wood on leather.

The Cougars did get a pair of runs in the sixth, one off a Susan Winningham home run, but the Storm answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-2 win.

Clackamas fell behind 4-2 in game two and Chemeketa extended their lead to 9-3 by the end of the fifth.  The Cougars racked up five in the top of the sixth to make it an 9-8 contest, but the Storm tacked on another run and won 10-8 in a game that featured a combined 28 hits by both clubs.

Winningham and Kristel Baeckel both homered for the Cougars.

In other region action, Mt. Hood (17-1, 29-4) swept Southwestern Oregon to remain at the top of the division while second place Lower Columbia (11-5, 27-6) ripped Clark to earned a pair of wins.

Clackamas will take on SW Oregon tomorrow at 2pm in Coos Bay.

Mt Hood edges Cougars in double header

April 17, 2008

Kayla Vedaa homers in the third inning of game two Oregon City - Top-ranked Mt Hood narrowly escaped with a double header win over sixth-ranked Clackamas in today's South Region action.

Both squads tallied a quick score in the first inning, but then the pitching duel began in the remaining innings as Renee Santos dueled the Saints' Lauren Hadenfeld.

Mt Hood finally managed to collect the winning run in the top of the sixth and held the Cougars in check in the seventh to win 2-1.

Santos, a 2007 NFCA All-American, pitched a fabulous two-hit, thirteen strikeout performance, but the Clackamas bats couldn't provide enough run support.

The Cougars got the run production in motion in game two and took an early 5-0 lead after two innings.

Starter Emily Kenagy and the defense were holding off the Saints through the first two innings, but a few hits in the third combined with Cougar fielding errors got the Saints on the board with four of their own.

Santos was sent into the game to cool the Saint bats and try to hold the 5-4 lead, but Mt. Hood managed to collect another to knot the game at 5-5.

Clackamas retook the lead in the fifth, 6-5 - but the Saints answered with two more in the sixth off a set of walks and a pair of errors to pull out the 7-6 win.

With the pair of wins, Mt Hood has firm hold on the top of the South Region at 13-1.  The Cougars drop to third place, a half game behind Lower Columbia who won a double header at Chemeketa today, 8-0 & 5-1.

The Cougars will travel to Carlon park in Selah, WA. [MAP], to participate in the 2008 NWAACC Softball Crossover Tournament (inter-region play).

Clackamas will open the tourney with Columbia Basin of the East Region on Saturday, April 19 at 12:30pm and then take on Skagit Valley of the North Region at 7:15pm. Check the schedule for Sunday's game match-ups.

Cougars ranked sixth in today's NWAACC poll

April 16, 2008

Vancouver, WA. -  The Mt. Hood Saints (11-1, 19-4) move up from fourth to the top of the rankings this week.  The Saints have been dominating the perennially tough South Region and have had double header sweeps of fourth-ranked Lower Columbia and sixth-ranked Clackamas.  East Region leader Walla Walla (15-3, 29-10) holds in the second position while East rival Wenatchee Valley (14-4, 28-8) follows in the third spot for the second straight week. Lower Columbia (5-5, 16-6) falls from the top spot to fourth this week.

Bellevue (14-0, 18-2) are red hot in the North Region and move up a spot to fifth. Clackamas (8-4, 12-11) drops a spot to sixth while West Region leader Pierce (13-1, 20-6) moves up from eighth to seventh.   Chemeketa (6-6, 13-9) and Spokane (12-4, 18-10) tied for the eighth spot. View Poll

Clackamas sweeps Southwestern Oregon

April 16, 2008

Emily KenagyOregon City - The Southwestern Oregon Lakers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Cougars (8-4, 12-10) answered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning and cruised to a 10-2 win in game one.

Renee Santos allowed one hit and struck-out nine (in an eight-run rule, five inning game) to pick up her eighth win of the season.  The Cougar bats supplied plenty of support led by Susan Winningham's and  Danyel Craycraft's combined five hits.  Winningham was 3 for 3 with a double and four RBI's while Craycraft went 2 for 3 with a double.

Clackamas scored the opening run in the first inning of game two and added another in the fifth.  The Lakers threatened in the top of the sixth with a home run to make it 2-1, but the Cougars scored again in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 win.

Emily Kenagy pitched a solid five inning, three-hit game to earn her first win the season. Santos took the mound in the sixth to secure the Clackamas win and picked up the save.

Ashley Roy and Mallory Callahan picked up a pair of hits each to lead the bats.

The only other region play in the South was halted when Lower Columbia and Chemeketa had to postpone their contest due to poor field conditions.

The sixth-ranked Cougars will take on top-ranked Mt Hood (11-1, 19-4) on Thursday, April 17 at Clackamas.  The Cougars will be looking to avenge their earlier double header losses at Mt Hood on April 04.  Game time is set for 3pm.

Cougars move into sole possession of second place with double header crushing of Clark

April 12, 2008
Oregon City - It only took a total of eight innings at bat for the Cougars to claim two easy wins over the Clark College Penguins.

Renee Santos tossed 12k's en route to a perfect game in the top of the double header. The All-American now has 128 strikeouts on the season and 537 for her J.C. career.

Santos had great run support led by Ashley Roy, Susan Winningham, Kristel Baeckel and Ashley Garner.  The four ladies all got a pair of hits with Baeckel and Winningham belting homers.  For Baeckel it was her third homer in the last two days and Winningham is leading the team with five homers and a .433 batting average

Ashley Bjork pitched a two-hitter and also held the Penguins scoreless in game two.  Mallory Callahan, Baeckel and Garner posted two hits in the contest.  Callahan had the big bat for the Cougars with her first homer of the season.

The win moves the Clackamas (6-4, 10-11) into second place behind Mt. Hood who leads the region with a 9-1 record.  Mt Hood defeated Lower Columbia in two games today to drop the Red Devils into a third place tie with Chemeketa with a 5-5 record.

The Cougars will have a chance to gain some ground on Mt Hood when they host the Saints on Tuesday, April 15 for a double header at 3pm.

Fifth-ranked Cougs lost hold of game two in extra innings

Oregon City - In a match-up of what is arguably the biggest rivalry in NWAACC softball over the last few decades, Clackamas (3-3, 7-10) and Lower Columbia (3-3, 14-4) battled it out again today of the Cougar's turf.

Clackamas jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning racking up a run in the third and another two in the fourth.  Lower Columbia responded in the fifth with a solo run and made an attempt to tie the game in the top of the seventh, but only managed to collect a run as the Cougars and Renee Santos took the victory 3-2.

Santos mowed down nine Red Devil batters on strikeouts in the contest.  Sophomore Ashley Roy went 2-3 at the plate and freshman Kristel Baeckel went yard for one of the Cougar runs.

The Devils got the bats going early in game two opening the top of the first with three runs to put Clackamas in an early hole.  The lead was short lived however as the Cougars put runs on the board in each of the first three innings to take a 4-3 lead going into the fourth.

Behind by two, Lower Columbia again tried to rally in the top of the seventh, this time they succeeded scoring two to knot the contest at five all.  The Cougars couldn't answer in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

The Devils got the lead batter on second base in the top of the eighth off a hit and sacrifice bunt.  With two outs, the fourth hitter doubled to score the only run of the inning while Lower Columbia's Courtney Sherman was able to shut down the next three Cougar batters on strikeouts in a 5-6 loss for the Cougars.

Clackamas got some good production at the plate from Susan Winningham (3-4, including a double) and from both Taya Clark and Kristel Baeckel as both ladies went 2-4.  Baeckel had the strong bat for the series, sending two balls outside the fences.

With the split, Clackamas is in a four-way tie for second in the South with Lower Columbia, Chemeketa and Southwestern Oregon - all with 3-3 records.

The Cougars face the Chemeketa Storm (3-3, 10-6) in a double-header on Friday, April 11th at 3pm at Clackamas.

Clackamas goes 4-2 on Arizona trip

March 27, 2008

Chandler, AZ - The Cougars split decisions with both Yavapai College of Prescott, Arizona and Chandler-Gilbert Community College of Chandler, Arizona to finish the six-game Arizona trip with a 4-2 record.

The Cougars played the Yavapai Roughriders of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) yesterday. The Roughriders (34-9) are currently ranked 13th in the 46-state NJCAA Div I rankings.  Yavapai was down 11-5 in the bottom of the seventh and rallied to score three runs, but the Cougars held on to win 11-8 on an 8K performance by Renee Santos.

Clackamas batters provided Santos with plenty of hit support in the contest - Susan Winningham and Emily Kenagy combined for five hits and two homers, Danyel Craycraft got three singles on three plate appearances and Mallory Callahan got three hits on four at bats.

In game two, Yavapai jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning, but Clackamas ripped off four runs in the top of the fifth to knot the game 4-4.  The Roughriders scored another in the sixth and pulled out the win 5-4.  Craycraft again had a perfect game at the plate hitting 3-3 while Winningham hit .500 on four at bats with a single and a double.

In today's action, the Cougars took on the Chander-Gilbert Coyotes (15-26). CG took a quick 1-0 lead after one, but Clackamas answered with a pair of runs in the third.  Both squads picked up a run in the fifth to make it a 3-2 Cougar lead then Clackamas blew the game wide open with a five-run seventh inning and went on to win 8-4.  Santos picked up the victory with 8k's to improve her record to 4-3 on the season.  Ashley Roy had the hot stick for the team, going 2-3 at the plate.

After several games with good offense, the bats cooled a bit too much for Clackamas and pitcher Ashley Bjork the follow-up game.  The Cougars took a 1-0 advantage in the third, but the Coyotes exploded for seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to snatch the win 7-1.  Clackamas was unable to play the final inning to ensure that they would be on time for the scheduled flight back to Portland.

Roy had another good performance at the plate, hitting 2-3 with a pair of doubles.  Bjork helped her cause on the mound with a pair of singles and Winningham also singled twice.

Clackamas (4-7) begins region play with a double-header at Clark College (2-6) on Tuesday, April 01. Game one will begin at 3pm.

Cougars win double header in Phoenix
Renee Santos breaks Cougar strikeout record

March 22, 2008
Phoenix, AZ - The Cougars picked up their first two wins of the season against the Paradise Valley CC Pumas of Phoenix, Arizona.  The Cougars trailed Paradise 1-0 going into the top of the seventh, but Clackamas rallied for five runs to win 5-1.  Ashley Roy and Susan Winningham led the bats for the Cougs.  Roy went 3 for 3 with a double and Winningham tallied another three hits.

Ace Renee Santos held the Pumas to just three hits and mowed down 13 batters to take the all-time strikeout record at Clackamas with 448.  The previous career record of 440 was held by Holly Marlow who pitched for the Cougars during the 2004-05 seasons.

Clackamas again found themselves in a pinch for runs in the top of the seventh in game two.  The Pumas picked four runs through the first three innings while the Cougars collected a pair in the second and third innings.  Clackamas then scored four in the seventh and held Paradise Valley in check to win another come-from-behind victory 6-4.

Mallory Callahan went 2-3 at the plate and Susan Winningham touched all four bags with a home run.

The Cougars will enjoy some time off in Arizona before taking on Yavapai CC Roughriders of Prescott, AZ in a double header being at noon on March 26.

Linfield JV squeaks by young Cougar squad

March 12, 2008
Susan Winninham smiles after belting her seond straight home run in Wednesday's game 1.Oregon City, Ore. - Linfield jumped out to any early 5-0 lead in the top of the first and the Cougars were forced to play come back ball the rest of the way.  Clackamas tied the game 7-7 in the bottom of the fourth off back to back homers by Susan Winningham who dove in the 4 runs, but the Wildcats picked up four more in the fifth. The Cougars rallied in the seventh, picking up two more runs, but fell short in an 11-9 loss.

Ace Renee Santos took the mound in game two and had Linfield on the edge of a 5-1 loss in the top of the seventh, before three Cougar fielding errors allowed a five-run Wildcat rally.

Clackamas takes its third tough loss in a many games.  Santos was again on her game, mowing down 15 Linfield batters and allowing only one earned run in a 6-5 loss.

While the Cougars only field two sophomore starters from last season's NWAACC runner-ups and have taken the short end of three pre-league losses to 4-yr schools, they are showing signs of emerging as force in the league in '08.

Clackamas will continue to challenge 4-year squads when they hit the road for a pair of games at Northwest Christian College on Saturday, March 15th and at Southern Oregon University on March 16. Both doubleheaders will begin at noon.

Renee SantosMarch 5, 2008
