Sophomore Michelle Robinson nails a game winning RBI single during CCC's seventh inning rally Tuesday. |
OREGON CITY, OR -- With the 2011 season winding down, the fifth-ranked Cougars needed to finish strong in their remaining Southern Region games to have a shot at a second straight region title. CCC did keep it's title hopes alive, going 3-1 on the week with a split against second-ranked Mt. Hood Saints Tuesday and a sweep of the Chemeketa Storm Wednesday.
The Saints broke a scoreless game in the fifth inning in the opener Tuesday with a pair of runs and added another in the sixth. CCC rallied back in the bottom of the sixth with a two run double by Kayla Hopkinson to score Mary Lugar and Brianna Brace to close the gap to 3-2 Saints. Emily Woolf got in scoring position in the seventh off a sac bunt by Bailie Foxworthy, but the Cougar bats ran out of gas. Ace Ashley Suter mowed down 11 Saint batters in a tough loss.
Abbey Tollefsen held Mt Hood scoreless for five innings in game two as CCC mounted a 3-0 lead after five. With the bases loaded and a run in, Tollefsen found herself in a bind in the sixth. Suter was brought in and did get CCC out of the inning but not before the Saints scored three more to take a 4-3 lead. CCC needed some production in the seventh to avoid the home sweep. Caitlyn Frasier began a game winning rally with a hit to reach first base. With two outs and the game on the line, Brace singled to advance Frasier to second. Hopkinson drilled an RBI single to left center to score Frasier and put Brace on third. Michelle Robinson then capped off the comeback with a single to send Brace home and take a 5-4 win.
Weather was a bit of issue on Wednesday in Salem. CCC manufactured four runs with two outs to take a 4-0 lead after two innings. The Storm made the most of the few hits Suter allowed and were only behind 5-2 when CCC erupted for another three runs in the fifth, highlighted by Katie Aden's two run homer. The game was called at that point due to weather and gave the Cougs an 8-2 win. Chemeketa opted not to wait for another weather break and forfeited the second game of the twin bill.
Clackamas (13-5, 19-8) must now win their remaining two games against SW Oregon on Saturday (Home 12pm start) for an outside shot at the region title. Mt Hood (13-3, 18-8) is scheduled to host SW Oregon (13-3, 24-10) on Thursday, May 12th then hosts Clark on Saturday May 14th [standings].
If CCC remains in third place after the weekend dust settles, they will likely face either fourth-ranked Walla Walla or third-ranked Wenatchee Valley (currently tied for East #1) in the opening round of the playoffs.

Freshman outfielder Caitlyn Frasier soars past third base on her way to home during CCC's 9-1 win over Clark Tuesday. |
OREGON CITY, OR -- The Cougars remain in the hunt for a second consecutive Southern Region title as they swept Clark in a double header at home Tuesday. Ashley Suter held the Penguins to just three hits in a five strikeout, complete game shutout during a game one 3-0 win. Abbey Tollefsen tossed another strong performance from the mound in game two, allowing just four hits in four innings with Noelle Wright finishing off the final three batters in a 9-1, five inning victory.
Clark's Michele Westmorland effectively held the Cougar bats at bay until Kayla Hopkinson's two run double broke a scoreless game to give CCC a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Mary Lugar added an insurance run in the fifth on a single that sent Caitlyn Frasier home from second base to complete the scoring.
CCC's bats seemed a little subdued in the opener, but they ignited in the first inning of game two as the Cougars jumped all over Penguin starter Kenzie Graber. Graber could do nothing to stop the bleeding as CCC kept filling the bases and scoring at will in an eight run inning. Rachael Strong added a fence clearing homer to help finish off the Penguins in the second inning for the 9-1 win. Eight Cougars had hits including dual hit performances by Bailie Foxworthy, Katie Aden, Michelle Robinson, Strong, Lugar and Frasier.
The wins improve CCC's region record to 10-4 in the South Region standings, a game behind SW Oregon (11-3) and two games behind Mt Hood (12-2). SW Oregon maintained their game lead over the Cougars by sweeping Chemeketa while Mt Hood split with Lower Columbia to help keep CCC's chances for a region title in range.
The Cougars will next host Mt Hood in a pivotal region match up on Saturday, May 7th at CCC. Opening pitch is slated for a 12pm start. The Cougars will look to avenge the April 20th MHCC home sweep [schedule].

SS Mary Lugar catches the LCC runner stealing during CCC game two win. |
OREGON CITY, OR -- The fifth-ranked Cougars continued to tread water in the ever so tough South Region this past week with splits against sixth-ranked Southwestern Oregon and seventh-ranked Lower Columbia.
After giving up a first inning homer to SW Oregon's Nicole Wilkerson, sophomore All-American Ashley Suter baffled the Laker lineup last Wednesday as she tossed a three-hit, 17 strikeout performance to lead CCC to a 9-1 win. Suter's 17 strikeouts is her top performance in a Cougar uniform as she continues to ascend the CCC career strikeout board. She now has 323 career K's and only trails Cougar greats Holly Marlow's 440 (2004-05) and Renee Santos' 706 (2007-08) [see records].
Suter got plenty of run support as the Cougar lineup chewed up Laker ace Karly Harris. Harris (13-3) entered the game with a 1.96 ERA posting 80 strikeouts. Sophomore Mary Lugar went 4-4 including a lead off homer in the fifth inning while sophomore Emily Woolf collected her first collegiate homer scoring another two runs in the fifth. Sophomore Rachael Strong made the most of her at bats scoring three RBIs, one on a two RBI single in the third to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead.
The Cougars bats have appeared to be Jekyll & Hyde in double headers this season and game two featured Mr Hyde in the rotation. After clobbering one the of top pitchers in the league in game one, the CCC bats fell silent in game two against Natalie Morrow (5-6, 4.03 ERA). The Cougars only managed four hits and got their only run on a fifth inning homer by freshman Katie Aden to close the gap to 2-1 SW Oregon. The Lakers tallied another run in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 victory. Sophomore all-star Abbey Tollefsen was tabbed with the loss in a solid six-hit, complete game showing.
CCC took a 3-1 series win over arch rival Lower Columbia in Saturday's twin bill. LCC's Hannah Pomeroy somehow found a way to keep the Cougar bats at bay while her and Suter put on a pitching clinic. Pomeroy's troops managed to squeeze out the game's only run on the top of the seventh and held on avoid the potential CCC season sweep. Suter (7-2) took a hard loss while tossing a three hit, 6k, complete game.
The CCC bats came alive on the second game and lit up Red Devil starter Tailor Snow for two runs in the bottom of the first off three hits and a HBP. LCC countered by putting game one star Pomeroy back on the mound in an attempt to keep the game close, but she also took a beating as CCC went on to win a 9-1, eight-run rule shortened, five inning game. Tollefsen held LCC to just two hits on three strikeouts for her fifth win of the season. Every Cougar batter came up with a hit led by freshman Caitlyn Fraiser's 3-3 performance. In a total team effort, seven CCC batters had RBIs with Woolf and Lugar tallying two apiece.
The consecutive DH splits have caused the Cougars to dip to third place in the South standings. CCC (8-4) is now a game behind SW Oregon (9-3) and three games in back of Mt Hood (11-1) with only eight games remaining on the schedule.
CCC will be hosting double headers against Clark on Wednesday, May 4th (3pm) and Saturday, May 7th (12pm).

Rachael Strong is all smiles following her two run homer during game two against Chemeketa |
OREGON CITY, OR -- The Cougars were knocked out of first place at Mt. Hood last week when they fell on the wrong side of close results in a pair of 5-6 and 6-9 losses. CCC opened game one with a 3-0 first inning lead off a 2-run homer by Rachael Strong and an RBI single from Michelle Robinson to score Kayla Hopkinson. Hood came back to score a pair of runs in the second and third innings to take a 4-3 lead. CCC countered on RBIs by Mary Lugar and Brianna Brace to regain the lead at 5-4 in the top of the fourth. The Saints scored in the fifth to tie it 5-5 and both defenses held on to send the contest into extra innings where MHCC found the winnings run in the bottom of the eighth.
CCC again led off with three runs in the opening inning of game two, but MHCC countered with six runs over three innings to take a 6-3 lead after three innings. The Cougars moved to within one with two runs in the fourth but MHCC tacked on three more in the fifth that was all they needed to take it 9-6.
Emily Kirk, Brace, and Robinson tallied RBI singles for CCC's first three runs while Lugar ripped a two RBI double in the fourth and Brace scored off an MHCC error in the seventh for CCC's final run.
The Cougars faired much better on Saturday with two overwhelming wins over Chemeketa in a home double header.
Ashley Suter held the Storm to just 3 hits on a complete game, five inning shutout with 9 strikeouts to win her sixth game of the season. The Cougars got their first two runs off a fence clearing blast by Hopkinson and added another on a Chemeketa error that scored Noelle Wright. CCC blew the game wide open in the fourth with five runs capped by Brace's two run double to lead the Cougars to a 8-0 win.
Abbey Tollefsen had the Storm batters totally baffled in game two as she tossed a complete game no-hitter to spark the defense as CCC went on to blast Chemeketa 14-0 in another eight run rule shortened contest.
The Cougs opened with a pair of runs in the first inning then followed with eight more in the second to jump out to a 10-0 lead. CCC tacked on two more in the third and fourth. The CCC lineup got hits from seven different players highlighted by two RBI home runs by Strong and Lugar. Strong also drilled a two run double in the fourth to cap off the scoring for CCC.
The Cougars took a dip in the latest NWAACC rankings, dropping three spots to fifth this week. Clackamas now sits in a tie with SW Oregon for second place in the South standings with a 6-2 record while Mt Hood leads the pack with a 7-1 region record.
CCC will next hit the road to take on sixth-ranked SW Oregon on Wednesday, April 25 in Coos Bay. opening pitch is slated for a 12pm start [schedule].

OREGON CITY, OR -- The 2nd-ranked Cougars got their 2010 Southern Region title defense off to a great start this past weekend with huge road wins over Lower Columbia in Longview, WA on Friday and Clark College in Vancouver on Saturday.
CCC stunned the sixth-ranked Red Devils with a pounding in game one, 16-0. Sophomore All-American Ashley Suter (Tigard HS) held LCC to just one hit and struck out 6 to improve her season record to 3-0.
Eight Cougars recorded hits led by freshman Bailie Foxworthy (Gladstone HS) who went 4-4 with three singles, a double while recording five RBIs and a steal. Freshman Brianna Brace (Century HS) doubled in her first at bat and followed with a two run homer in a seven run third inning. Sophomore Emily Woolf (Grants Pass HS) collected three singles with sophomore Mary Lugar (Oregon City HS), sophomore Rachael Strong (Oregon City HS), freshman Charli Woodard (North Marion HS) and freshman Kayla Hopkinson (Crater HS) each turning in a pair of hits. Strong's third inning base clearing double, on the heals of Brace's homer, accounted for three more Cougar scores.
CCC again blanked LCC in game two as sophomore all-region pitcher Abbey Tollefsen (2-1) took the mound for five innings, holding the Devils to just one hit and striking out three. Noelle Wright picked up the save with three strikeouts in two innings of work.
Strong led the way at the plate as she nearly hit for the cycle with a single, a double, a two-run homer and recorded three RBIs.
Clark gave CCC a bit more of a challenge on Saturday in game one. Clark was only down by a run, 3-2, going into the seventh, but CCC manufactured three runs to seal the win. Suter (4-0) picked up the win on a six hit, eleven strikeout, complete game performance.
Foxworthy again had a very productive showing at the plate with three singles and a steal. Lugar also collected a pair of singles and turned in a steal of her own.
Tollefsen took the mound for game two and blanked the Penguins for four innings before Wright came in to close it in the fifth. Clackamas held a 3 run lead heading into the fifth then exploded for 10 runs to help end the game early on the international 8-run rule.
Foxworthy, Brace, Lugar, Shirelle Adams (Madras HS) and Katie Aden (Tigard HS) each had two hits. Lugar's hits accounted for five bases as she doubled and tripled while Adams also tripled. Five Cougars stole bases led by Foxworthy's two steals. Aden led all hitters in RBIs with three.
CCC now sits a top of the Southern Region at 4-0 (8-1 overall) along with SW Oregon (4-0, 12-6) while Mt Hood (2-0, 4-4) trails closely behind in third [standings].
Clackamas will have a short break before traveling Friday to take part in the NWAACC Crossover Tourney in Selah, WA on April 16 & 17. On Saturday, CCC will take on S. Puget Sound (3-6) at 9am followed by third-ranked Walla Walla at 11am. Sunday's action includes Skagit Valley at 10am and a meeting with top-ranked Wenatchee Valley at 12pm [schedule].

OREGON CITY, OR -- The 2011 Clackamas Cougars kicked off the season with a 4-1 pre-region record going into the always grueling Southern Region competition.
CCC opened the season at the NWAACC Pre-season Tourney in Richland, WA on Saturday, Mar 19th with a 6-5 win over Spokane (7-11). CCC got on the scoreboard in the first on an RBI triple by Mary Lugar that scored Bailie Foxworthy followed by a score by Lugar on an RBI ground out by Emily Kirk. Spokane scored in the third then racked up another three in the top of the fifth to snatch a 4-2 lead. Katie Aden closed the gap in the bottom of the fifth when she doubled to score Foxworthy and Lugar to make it 4-4. Rachael Strong helped collect a pair of game winning runs in the sixth when she bunted to advance runners from first and second but ended up scoring the pair on an errant throw to first in a 6-5 Cougar win. Noelle Wright picked up the win in relief of All-American Ashley Suter. Suter went 4.2 innings giving up 4 runs (2 earned) and striking out 6. Wright, a freshman, earned her first win as a Cougar, allowing a run and striking out two.
The Cougars were one the wrong side of another one-run decision in the second game with a 2-1 loss to Yakima Valley (9-9). The Yaks got runs in the first and second and did just enough to keep the Cougs off the scoreboard until Charli Woodward singled to score Brianna Brace from second to give CCC its only score of the game. Abbey Tollefsen went four innings in the loss, striking out three while Suter closed it out with three Ks of her own.
CCC had the offensive game of the tournament Sunday when the Cougars thumped Treasure Valley (8-9) with 19 runs on 11 hits and two home runs in the third inning to cruise to a 22-4 win. Michelle Robinson, Kayla Hopkinson and Strong led the hot CCC bats that collected 16 hits. Robinson went 4-4 with four singles and an RBI; Strong ripped a pair of homers and accounted for 8 RBIs and Hopkinson had a double and a homer to go along with her 3 RBIs. Suter got her first win of the season with 9 strikeouts in four innings of work.
The Cougs had its third game of the season decided by a single run when they took a 8-7 win over Columbia Basin (13-8). Caitlyn Frasier lifted the Cougs to the victory in the bottom of the seventh with two outs when she singled to score Brace from third. The Cougar bats were paced by Frasier who had a single, a double and three RBIs; Aden with a pair of singles; Hopkinson with a double & RBI and Lugar with a triple and two RBIs. Wright went the distance on the mound to notch her second win with 4 strikeouts.
Clackamas wrapped up the non-league play in Bellevue last weekend. Scheduled to play Bellevue and Shoreline, CCC only managed to get in one of the two games due to poor weather conditions. Shoreline was the unlucky recipient of Ashley Suter's dazzling display on the mound as Suter baffled Dolphin batters for 10 strikeout on a one-hit, complete game shut-out. Brace and Hopkinson gave Suter all the run support she needed in a 3-0 CCC win. Brace ripped a two run homer in the second inning to score Strong and Hopkinson singled in the seventh to score Charli Woodward.
Clackamas' five non-league games is the fewest the program as had heading into region play since its first season in the league back in 1985 when it only played one non-region game. Budget cuts had forced NWAACC teams to reduced schedules while weather has attributed to the cancellation of two tournaments (eight CCC games) along with the Bellevue rainout.
The Cougars did get in a few scrimmages against NW Christian College and Concordia University earlier in the season. CCC took the pair against NWC and split with CU.
CCC is next slated to play Lower Columbia to open region play tomorrow, but weather will likely delay that contest until Thursday or Friday at the earliest [schedule].

OREGON CITY, OR -- The CCC softball program enters 2011 with high expectations. The Cougars finished the 2010 season 3rd in the NWAACC Tournament and Southern Region Champions. Fifth-year head coach Jessica Buel will be looking upon 7 returners and 11 newcomers to bring the Cougars back to the NWAACC Championship game.
“This year’s team has a lot of expectations and we are looking to improve upon last year’s success,” says Buel, “but a lot will be put on the shoulders of our returners.”
Infield
CCC will be looking upon sophomore Michelle Robinson (Hillsboro, OR) and Bailie Foxworthy (Oregon City, OR) to anchor the Cougar’s middle infield. Robinson (2010 All-Region selection) known for her steady glove and strong bat will start as the Cougar’s second baseman. Foxworthy has great range and a quick release at short stop, but it’s her bat and quickness that will surprise a lot of people this season. Freshman Charli Woodard (Aurora, OR) will be asked to take on the responsibility as the Cougar’s infield utility players. Sophomore Mary Lugar (Oregon City, OR) will see time at third base. Lugar, a 2010 All-Region selection, has a solid glove and strong arm and a potentially very productive bat. Freshman Kayla Hopkinson (Central Point, OR) will start at first base. Hopkinson brings great leadership to the infield and a strong bat the lineup.
Catchers
Two sophomore catchers will fight for time behind the plate, Emily Woolf (Grants Pass, OR) (2010 All-NWAACC Tournament Team) and Rachael Strong (Oregon City, OR) (2010 All-Region selection). Woolf whose work ethic is second to none, will give the Cougar’s leadership behind the plate. Strong offers strength and a good bat to the lineup. Both will see time in the catcher position this season.
Outfield
Sophomore Emily Kirk (Portland, OR) will be joined this season by freshmen Katie Aden (Tigard, OR), Ashlie Ostrander (Redmond, OR), Caitlyn Frasier (Lake Oswego, OR), Shirelle Adams (Madras, OR) and Briana Brace (Beaverton, OR). Ostrander, Frasier and Adams bring speed to the Cougar lineup. Aden, will bring a solid glove, strong arm and powerful bat to the heart of the Cougar lineup. Kirk will add leadership and power at the plate. Brace will see time as a utility player.
Pitchers
Sophomores Ashley Suter (Tigard, OR) (2010 NWAACC All-American and 2010 Southern Region Pitcher of the year) and Abbey Tollefsen (Hillsboro, OR) (2010 All-Region selection), are expected to be the top starters in 2011. Freshman Noelle Wright (Irrigon, OR), 2A 1st Team All-State selection and Holly Fenwick (Sandy, OR) will round out the pitching staff. Both we see a lot of time on the mound and in the DP role this season.
The Cougars will open their schedule against Northwest Christian University and Concordia University in scrimmages and follow that with a preseason playing in a variety of tournaments. “This is a competitive schedule for us,” said Buel, “not only are we facing four-year colleges, but we have also scheduled some of the top junior colleges in the area.”

Portland, OR -- It was all all Southern Region semifinal at the championship at Delta Park as all four South seeded teams took care of business Monday to shoot it out for the championship.
Consistent rain delays throughout the day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday force tournament officials to change the double elimination tournament format to a single elimination with all games being played back to back.
Clackamas opened the tournament Monday with a 3-2 win over Green River to make it to the quarterfinals. CCC had to come from from behind as the Gators built a 2-0 lead with runs in the top of the second and third innings on unearned runs.
The Cougars got all the run support they needed in the bottom half of the third when three runners crossed home plate to make it 3-2.
Ashley Suter kept the Gators in check the rest of the way as she piled on 13 strikeouts on a four-hit performance for her 17th win of the season.
Emily Morrill, Samie Genskay and Missy Eberhardt all had a pair of hits to lead the CCC batters.
The Cougars jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the quarterfinal against Everett and racked up more runs in the fourth and sixth to mount a 5-0 lead. The Trojans countered with a two run homer in the top of the seventh, but couldn't find an answer for Suter as the Cougars won 5-2.
Suter (18-4) picked up the win on an eight-hit, 9K performance. The Cougars had nine hits and were led by Rachael Strong's .666 (2-3) game batting average.
The Cougars drew Southwestern Oregon in the semifinal. CCC came into the game with three wins against one loss against the Lakers in regular season play.
SOCC got on the board in the first with a homer against Suter by the Laker's All-American Meg Harasymczuk. CCC knotted it at one all in the top of the third and then the pitching duel was on - two time All-American Annaleisha Parsley vs. freshman All-American Suter.
The two clubs went scoreless over the next six innings which initiated the 10th inning international tie-break rule (each team starts the inning with a runner on second). The Lakers capitalized on the lead runner in their at bat to stun the Cougars 2-1.
Suter turned in a stellar 14K, 3-hit performance in the loss.
Due to the single elimination format, Clackamas and Lower Columbia, who lost to eventual champion Mt Hood, took a share of third place.
Clackamas ends its terrific season with a 31-11 season record, a Southern Region Championship and a third place finish at the Championship.
Mt Hood won back to back titles for the first time in their program history with a 7-4 win over the Lakers in the title game.
Suter, Emily Morrill and Emily Woolf were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Vancouver, WA -- A region championship was on the line today as second-ranked Clackamas visited Clark while Mt Hood had to battle Lower Columbia in Longview. Both clubs entered the day in first place in the South Region with identical 14-4 league records.
The Cougars, as expected, got the job done with 11-1 and 10-2 results against Clark, who was entering the twin bill with a 3-11 region record.
Clackamas took control early in game one, exploding for eleven runs over the first two innings of play. Clark did manage to cool the CCC bats but could only score once as Clackamas took a 11-1 victory in a five inning, 8-run rule shortened, game.
Several Cougars wielded hot bats led by Emily Kirk's 3 for 4 performance. Emilly Morrill and Ashley Peterson went .500 at the plate going 2 for 4. Both Kirk and Morrill had triples in the contest.
Clackamas scored nearly as many in game two, but the runs came in spurts as they tallied their ten runs over five different innings for the 10-2 win.
The Cougs collected sixteen hits in the game with Mary Lugar, Rachael Strong and Samie Genskay notching three hits each. Morrill and Peterson again had strong plate performances going 2 for 4.
Cougar aces Ashley Suter and Abbey Tollefsen only allowed a combined five hits. Suter, a strikeout specialist, mowed down nine Penguins, en route to her 16th win of the season against four losses. Tollefsen's stellar record now stands at 12-3.
Top-ranked Mt Hood (14-6, 29-9) didn't fare as well on the day as fourth-ranked Lower Columbia (12-8, 32-9) took the Saints for two games 4-3 and 7-3.
The Southern Region title is Clackamas' first since head coach Jessica [Farnsworth] Buel was a freshman at CCC in 1999 and the program's ninth overall. Clackamas have always had great results at the NWAACC Championship tournament [view CCC history], but Southern Region Championships are hard to come by... 19 of the last 21 NWAACC Championships have been won by Southern Region teams [NWAACC Champions], including CCC's last in 2005, a season when they only placed third in the South.
The Cougars will have to remain focused and ready to compete! Last year's conference champion was Mt Hood, a (lowly?) fourth seed from the South.
Clackamas (16-4, 29-10) will now look toward the NWAACC Softball Championship (May 21-24) where they will take on the West Region's 4th seeded team, the Green River Gators (17-13, 20-16). Opening pitch is scheduled for a 11:30am start on Friday, May 21 at Delta Park in Portland [view championship page].
