Men's Basketball NewsBrad King earns degreeMay 11, 2012 Ball accepts basketball scholarship to Carroll College in MontanaMay 11, 2012
OREGON CITY -- CCC’s Brett Ball has accepted a basketball scholarship to Carroll College in Montana. The 6’7 forward led the Southern Region in rebounding, averaging a double double in league play, with 13.7 ppg and 11.8 rpg. He earned 2nd team all region honors and was a member of the regional sophomore all star team and the NWAACC all academic team. He was also honorable mention all defensive team. He has also accumulated a two year GPA of 3.96 for his college course work in a demanding curriculum.
“Brett stands out as a sparkling example of what a scholar athlete should be: the kind of person who relentlessly pursues excellence in all his endeavors in the classroom and in the arena of competition,” said coach Wegner.
Ball’s improved play and inspired leadership were key contributors in Clackamas finishing the last 10 league games as the hottest team in the NWAACC. Added assistant coach Paul Fiskum, “We saw Brett grow immensely this year as a player, student, leader, and person. He worked hard every practice; in fact, every drill, all season long to make himself a better player.”
At Carroll College, Ball will be expected to make a sizable contribution as an impact player. “He should be a tremendous player there,” said Wegner. “It’s one of the top NAIA conferences in America, for sure; teams there have won the national championship. But we really think of Brett as a D-1 caliber kid, so we expect him to really make a splash there as a player, scholar, and leader.”
Ball is interested in studying physical therapy and sports medicine. His scholarship is in excess of $35,000 a year and will cover almost all of his college educational costs. NEXT GAME: Clackamas will host rival Mt. Hood in a 7:30 pm game Wednesday, January 18th [schedule].

Clackamas 83, Southwestern 88 [stats]
Clackamas (6-7, 0-1) fell to SWOCC, 88-83 in a road game to open Southern Region play. CCC played well enough in the first half to fashion a 48-38 lead at the half, hitting a sizzling 71% (10 of 14) from the three point line. Paul Walter and Taylor Dunn combined for 35 points and hit 10 of 12 threes. But CCC still could put the game away, mainly due to 12 Cougar turnovers and a 16-0 advantage to the Lakers in free throw attempts.
But CCC started the second half on the wrong end of a 32-13 run, playing poorly on the defensive end at critical times and cooling off on the offensive end. After falling behind by 12, the Cougars regrouped and fought back to tie the game at 78-78 inside the two minute mark. But Clackamas could not execute well enough on either end to get stops on defense and good shots on offense.
Walter finished with a career high 33 points to go with 10 rebounds. Dunn tallied 28 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Brett Ball added 7 points and a game high 12 rebounds. Alex Loul chipped in 8 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Andre Dickson added 5 points and 9 boards, including a game high 7 offensive rebounds. Josh Lokeno dished out 7 assists.
NEXT GAME: CCC entertains Chemeketa Wednesday at 7:30 pm in Randall Hall as Southern Region play continues.

| Sophomore guard Taylor Dunn drives for two of his game high 26 points. |
OREGON CITY, 0R -- Clackamas (6-6) fell to Peninsula in the championship game of the 2011 CCC Holiday Tournament by a score of 85-65. The Pirates were as good as their 10-1 record as they kept the Cougars at bay throughout the contest.
We struggled offensively,” said head coach Clif Wegner. “We needed to get the ball to our people when they were in good position to score. We also needed to score the ball better when we got those opportunities.”
The Cougars shot a meager 38% from the floor and 26% from the arc in the loss.
Only Cougars Taylor Dunn and Brett Ball were able to get much offense going. Dunn finished with a game high 26 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Ball turned a double double, with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Dunn and Ball were both named to the all- tournament team.
“Disappointing,” assessed coach Paul Fiskum. “Peninsula brought their A game, but we really did not. Our kids competed and played hard, but our execution was not as sharp on offense or defense. Kind of a B game for us.”
NEXT GAME: Clackamas will travel to Coos Bay to take on Southwestern Oregon (6-5) on January 7 at 6:00 pm in the Southern Region opener for both teams. Clackamas finished preseason with a 6-6 record and now faces the challenge of defending the Southern Region championship.
“Everyone in the NWAACC is 0-0 now and now comes the games that count toward getting into the tournament,” added assistant coach Brian Stamme. “We’ve played a killer schedule and seen most of the best teams in the NWAACC, so hopefully we are ready for region play.”

CCC 79, EVCC 60 [stats]
OREGON CITY, 0R -- Clackamas (6-5) jumped on the Trojans early to put the game away, racing out to a 44-19 lead at halftime after completely dominating all facets of play in the first half. CCC coaches substituted liberally in the second half, as all 11 players got into the scoring column, a season first for the team.
Again, the Cougar defense took center stage, limiting Everett to 29% shooting and grabbing a season high 57 rebounds to control the boards.
Taylor Dunn finished the game with 19 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Brett Ball added 13 points and 8 rebounds. Paul Walter had 12 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Alex Loul added 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists. And Malcolm Jackson chipped in 6 points and 4 rebounds.
The Cougars shot 47% from the field and 42% from the arc in the win.
NEXT GAME: Clackamas will take on Peninsula in the championship game of the CCC Holiday Tournament at 3 pm at Randall Hall Friday, December 30. Peninsula (9-1) is currently ranked #3 and features an outstanding player in J. T. Terrell, a transfer from Wake Forest who has signed to play at Southern Cal next season. Terrell leads the NWAACC in scoring, at 31.7 points per game.

| Sophomore forward Brett Ball notched another double double to help lead CCC to a 85-66 win over Blue Mountain. |
OREGON CITY, 0R --Taylor Dunn paced the offense, and the Clackamas defense stepped up a notch as the Cougars (5-5) beat Blue Mountain Community College (4-5) by a score of 85-66.
Dunn scored 30 points, hitting 10 of 17 shots, all 7 free throws, and 3 of 4 treys.
The Cougar defense forced 24 turnovers, grabbed 18 steals, and scored 33 points off Timberwolf turnovers. CCC also controlled the rebounding, 38-26.
“We all really played hard tonight,” said Paul Walter. “Every single guy. We really got a lot of good stuff in transition, with some good assists. That was fun to get out and run.” Walter finished with 11 points.
Brett Ball kept his double double habits up, with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Riley Charlish hit a pair of treys and all four free throws, to finish with 10 points, 2 assists, and a steal. Josh Lokeno played well, with 8 assists, 2 steals, 6 points, and 3 rebounds. Jake Dewitt had 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Alex Loul went stealth mode, with 3 rebounds and a career high 6 steals. And Andre Dickson gave an all out hustle effort, with 7 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals.
The Cougars finished the game shooting 47% from the floor, 54% from the arc, and 83% at the free throw line. “All great stats,” added assistant coach Brian Stamme. “And the great team thing is that a lot of those scoring opportunities were generated from our defense and good passing.”
NEXT GAME: The Cougars take on Everett College in a semifinal game at 7 pm Dec. 29 [tourney bracket].

SEATTLE, WA --Clackamas’ fortunes took a dip in recent action, as the Cougars lost both games at the Seattle Crossover Tournament.
CCC 81, Bellevue 86 [stats]
For the second time in a week, CCC (4-4) lost to Bellevue in a close and hard fought game that again came down to the final possessions. The first half was eyeball to eyeball, with both teams playing hard and the Cougars not backing down from the undefeated and No. 2 ranked Bulldogs. It was 40-37 at the half.
The second half was close as well, until Bellevue stretched out its lead to 15, at 74-59. But CCC re-grouped and came charging back into the game to give itself a chance to pull out the win. CCC trailed by 4 with 50 seconds to play and had possession, but could not score.
Five Cougars scored in double figures, led by Brett Ball’s 16 points and 10 rebounds. Paul Walter had 14 points and 3 assists. Taylor Dunn had 16 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals. Alex Loul played hurt, but still contributed 12 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Andre Dickson added 10 points. Freshman Jake Dewitt, making his first college start, added 8 points.
Game stats for shooting, assists, rebounds, and turnovers were virtually even, with one exception that left the CCC staff perplexed. “There were two pretty good college basketball teams going at it very hard, but we seemed to get called for all the fouls,” said assistant coach Paul Fiskum. They got 27 free throws and we got 6 for the game. We got beat by 18 points at the free throw line. That’s tough to overcome. Officials can’t see or call everything, but we were not committing 75% of the fouls in the contest.”
“True. We really didn’t get a break on the calls,” agreed head coach Clif Wegner. “That’s really a huge difference for our kids to overcome. Even so, we missed some easy shots down the stretch that would have put us over the hump and enabled us to win. We just need to concentrate on what we have control over. They are one of the best teams in the NWAACC and it was basically a home game for them. We were close. We change three plays and we win.”

SEATTLE, WA --
CCC 66, Pierce 72 [stats]
The Cougars dropped their second straight heartbreaker, this time against last year’s NWAACC runner-up Pierce (8-3). CCC (4-5) came out fast and hard, jumping out to a 14-3 lead to open the game. But Clackamas could not put the Raiders away and the have ended with the Cougars up by 6 at 38-32. The second half remained close, but CCC held the lead throughout, that is, until the final two minutes, when there were 5 lead changes and 2 ties down a hectic final stretch.
"We led the game for the first 37 minutes, but we just could not finish the job,” said assistant coach Paul Fiskum. “They really hit some huge, tough 3’s at the end of the shot clocks; mostly, we had them well defended; they just hit contested shots. They are pretty good again, but we could have beaten them if we had controlled the end better.”
Statistically, the game was very even, with one notable exception: the Cougars hit only 4 of 15 threes, while Pierce connected on 11 of 32. Total field goals and free throws were virtually dead even, but the Raiders amassed 7 more points at the arc. In the end, it was the difference. Only Paul Walter, who hit 3 of 6 attempts, was able to hit from deep for CCC.
Walter finished with a game high 18 points, as well as 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Andre Dickson added 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals. Taylor Dunn also was good for 13 points, 5 assists, and 4 steals. Josh Lokeno chipped in 5 points and 6 assists. And Brett Ball turned in another double double, with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
“We are really better than our win-loss record would indicate,” said assistant coach Brian Stamme. “All five losses have been on the road against very good teams and with some adversity to deal with. Three losses are to unbeaten teams, four of the losses ate to ranked teams, all five losses to NWAACC tourney teams, and all were on the road. Our losses have been to teams with a combined record of 32-6, so that’s pretty stiff competition.”
“It’s been a killer schedule for sure,” agreed head coach Clif Wegner. “Tough teams back to back, travel, some tough breaks......still we have hung in and had a chance to win almost every game, despite the adversity. We are close, but not quite there yet to win those types of games. When we play well, we are very good, but so far have not been consistent. It’s a pretty good, smart group of kids; we think they are getting it figured out. A lot of the issues are mental, like concentration, focus, and communication. We just need to change a couple of plays each game and all those losses could be wins. The losses really hurt, but they also force you to examine your play more closely and strengthen your will to fix them. We still think this can be a good team. The kids are still working hard and staying positive.”
Next Game: The Cougars finally return to Randall Hall for a game; they have not played at home since November 18th. Clackamas will play Blue Mountain in the 7 pm game of the CCC Holiday Tournament [bracket], which begins December 28th.

| Sophomore guard Taylor Dunn sparked CCC with 33 points in the win over Highline. |
DES MOINES, WA --Clackamas ended its two game skid with a tough road win at Highline College, beating the No. 7 ranked Thunderbirds. The teams came out like prizefighters trading punches and feeling each other out; after six minutes of play, 4 ties, and 4 lead changes, the Thunderbirds had a 14-12 lead. But the Cougars went on a scintillating 16-0 run to take control of the game at 28-14.
Taylor Dunn scored 10 straight points in the middle of the run. CCC extended its lead to 17 points before settling for a 41-26 halftime lead.
CCC held the lead for the rest of the contest, but things got a bit dicier. Highline, aided by 13 second half CCC turnovers and a huge advantage in fouls and free throws, manage to get the Cougar lead down to single digits. But Clackamas held together down the stretch, running its delay offense well and hitting key free throws in the final minutes.
Key team stats for CCC featured solid shooting: 52% FG, 43% on treys, and 71% at the free throw stripe. 18 assists on 29 baskets was indicative of good ball movement, sharing, and offensive execution.
Dunn led all scorers, with 33 points and 3 steals, hitting 7 of 9 free throws. Brett Ball added 16 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists. Alex Loul celebrated his 21st birthday, with 11 points and 3 rebounds. Paul Walter drew the big defensive assignment and also added 6 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. And Josh Lokeno chipped in 5 assists and 3 steals.

CCC 76, Bellevue 90 [stats]
BELLEVUE, WA --Clackamas could not repeat its performance at Highline, losing on the road at No. 3 ranked Bellevue, 90-76. The Cougars came out playing hard and took an early lead, at 29-22, but could not sustain the momentum. CCC held a 36-33 lead late in the half, but failed to score down the stretch to trail 40-36 at the break.
The Cougars never led again, although they stayed with the Bulldogs down the the final minutes.
“It was a decent effort, but we had spotty performances and didn’t defend very well at times. We were not nearly as sharp as the night before,” said assistant coach Brian Stamme.
Some bright spots: Alex Loul continued his birthday celebration with a career high 23 points, making 9 of 14 shots and 4 of 5 free throws. Paul Walter turned in his best game of the year, with 20 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Taylor Dunn had 14 points and 3 steals. And Brett Ball added 12 points and 6 rebounds.
CCC shot well for the night, hitting 48% from the floor, 43% from the arc, and 83% at the free throw line. But Bellevue was red hot, hitting on 71% of its field goals in the 2nd half and finishing at 61% for the game.
CCC travel to North Seattle CC to participate in the Seattle Crossover Tournament on December 17-19. The Cougars will open against Bellevue on Friday at 2pm.
November 29, 2011
VANCOUVER, WA -- Playing its fourth road game in five days, a flat and dispassionate Cougar team suffered an embarrassing 75-52 loss at Clark College.
Not looking anything like their No. 3 NWAACC ranking, CCC committed turnovers on its first four possessions and fell into a 12-0 deficit. That sent all five starters to a bench; the new CCC quintet did not fare any better, as the Clark lead ballooned to 31-7 before the Cougars discovered a pulse. A 20-4 Clackamas run cut the lead to 35-27 and suddenly it looked like a ball game again. But Clark countered with the last 5 points to take a 40-27 halftime lead.
Then it got worse after halftime. A 25-7 run by Clark to start the second half put the lead to 65-34 and it was all over but the final count. The combination of flat play and miserable shooting left CCC with one of its worst losses in recent memory. The Cougars shot a frigid 31% from the field, 0 of 7 from the arc, and just 59% from the line.
Andre Dickson led the CCC scorers with 13 points and Brett Ball and Taylor Dunn each added 10 points.
NEXT GAME: The Cougars continue their road warrior schedule with two ranked and challenging opponents, going to Highline for a 7:00 pm tip Thursday, December 8 and then take on Bellevue Friday, December 9.
November 27, 2011
MT. VERNON, WA -- No. 2 ranked Clackamas (3-1) fell to No. 10 ranked Walla Walla (3-0) 64-53 in the title game of the 38th Annual Turkey Classic. In the process, CCC, arguably the top offensive basketball program in the NWAACC for over a decade, just could not put the ball in the basket, going 5 of 33 from the field in the second half and finishing the game shooting 31% (19/61.)
The 53 point total was also a new low in the tenure of head coach Clif Wegner.
“Feckless, inept, disjointed. Pick an adjective,” said Wegner in trying to assess the offense. “Too many assignment breakdowns, too many off balance shots, too many times failing to finish shots where we had great chances to score.”
Sadly, the Cougars had a chance to take control of the game early, flirting with double digit leads throughout the first 10 minutes of the contest. But too many turnovers and a spotty rebounding performance left CCC with a precarious 35-31 lead at the half.
Then came the disastrous offensive performance of the second half. Only Taylor Dunn was able to generate any offense for the Cougars; he finished with 29 points (10/10 free throws), 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Andre Dickson led the effort on the boards with 11. Dunn and Brett Ball were named to the all tournament team.
“It’s a growing process every year with a new team, but we absolutely have to learn how to play three tough games in a row,” assessed assistant coach Paul Fiskum. “I think we played so hard against Tacoma and it was such a big win that emotionally and physically we did not bounce back strong enough. We will get back to work on that.”
Next game: CCC with travel across town to take on Clark College in a 7 pm game Tuesday, November 29 [schedule - standings].
November 26, 2011
MT. VERNON, WA -- The Cougars (3-0) renewed their NWAACC rivalry with Tacoma and came away with a big win. CCC will play Walla Walla in the championship of the Turkey Classic. In the biggest matchup of ranked NWAACC teams, #3 Clackamas and #2 Tacoma put on a show for college basketball fans.
TCC jumped out to a 23-13 lead, but the Cougars clawed back to within 37-33 to end the half. The battle was close throughout, with 6 lead changes and 4 ties. But the new CCC team pulled together and held tough down the stretch at crunch time to pull away for the win.
“Great effort,” summarized assistant coach Paul Fiskum. “The best and hardest we have played. The kids really came together tonight for a big win. We turned the corner tonight. This will make us better.”
Taylor Dunn again led the Cougar offense, hitting 9 of 10 free throws for 27 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Brett Ball came up with his best effort this season: 22 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks, and a steal. Josh Lokeno turned in an outstanding floor game, spearing the defense and controlling the offense; he finished with 11 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals.
Clackamas shot 49% from the field and 76% from the line while holding TCC to 38% shooting.
Next game: The Cougars take on #10 ranked and undefeated Walla Walla in the championship game of the Turkey Classic at 3 pm at Skagit Valley College.
November 25, 2011
MT. VERNON, WA -- The Cougars (2-0) met Northwest Indian College, a four-year college, in the opening round of the 38th Annual Turkey Classic. The CCC team was cold, sluggish and downright poor to start the game, turning the ball over, breaking down on defense, and playing impatiently on offense. Consequently, the Clackamas team found itself on the short end of a 45-25 deficit to start the game before an 8-2 run at the end of the first half closed the gap a bit. Still, the half ended with CCC trailing 47-33 and looking in disarray.
After playing such a miserable first half, the halftime intermission was not for the faint of heart. “Coach really called us out at halftime,” said sophomore Paul Walter. “He was brutally direct, to put it politely. He did not sugar coat it; but he was right on. We were playing like a bunch of individuals and not being tough enough. We had it coming; we came out much tougher in the second half.”
CCC started with an 8-2 run and got back in the game, finally taking its first lead at 66-65 with 6 minutes to play. The crunch time run was exciting, with 7 lead changes and 13 ties. Finally, Andre Dickson, who finished with 8 points and 9 rebounds, grabbed an offensive rebound and drew a foul with 1.2 seconds to play, then hit the free throw for the winning point.
Taylor Dunn torched the nets for 36 points. Paul Walter added 10 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 assists. Brett Ball added 8 points and 11 rebounds. Alex Loul provided an offensive lift in the second half, finishing with 7 points and 6 rebounds. And Josh Lokeno and Jake Dewitt evenly split a combined 10 points and 6 assists.
Next game: The No. 3 ranked Cougars with take on unbeaten and No. 2 ranked Tacoma in a semifinal game at 6 pm Saturday, November 26.

CCC 88, Linfield JV 75
OREGON CITY -- CCC (1-0) opened the season with a 88-75 win over the Linfield JV team. It was a meshing of the new and returning Cougar players, still learning to sync up all the new parts.
Returning lettermen Josh Lokeno, Andre Dickson, Alex Loul, and Paul Walter all showed pretty clearly they have improved from last season. Lokeno had 10 points and a pair each of rebounds, assists, and steals. Dickson hit 5 of 6 shots for 12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and a game high 4 steals. Loul grabbed 5 rebounds while Walter had a double double, with 17 points to go with his 10 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals.
Sophomore transfers Taylor Dunn and Brett Ball made their Cougar debuts and also showed they will be valuable assets to the 2012 team. Dunn was the best offensive player on the night, with a game high 22 points on 10 varied field goals. He also added 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and 6 assists with no turnovers. Ball added 6 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, and a steal in limited minutes.
The Cougars also welcomed this year’s freshman recruiting class: Riley Charlish, Jake Dewitt, Malcolm Jackson, Andrew Weaver, and Matt Bryant.
Bryant registered a double double, with 12 points and a game high 14 rebounds, a block and a steal. Charlish chipped in 2 points and 2 rebounds. Dewitt added 5 points, a steal, and drew the season’s first defensive charge. Jackson contributed 2 rebounds and a steal while Weaver added 2 rebounds and a steal.
CCC shot a decent 48% from the floor but hit only 31% on threes and 67% from the free throw line. The Cougars dominated the boards 49-32 and also amassed 18 steals.
“It takes a while for kids to gel and play together,” said Coach Clif Wegner. “At times, we played well; at other times, we were really bad. The Linfield team had some pretty good athletes and a couple of varsity kids; they played hard and went at us, so it was a good game for us to experience and grow as a team from.”
NEXT GAME: The Cougars travel to Mt. Vernon, Washington to play in the 8 team Turkey Classic. CCC plays the 8 pm game on Friday, November 25th vs. Northwest Indian College.

Nate Keilholtz |
OREGON CITY -- Returning letterman Nate Keilholtz, a 6’4 starter on last season’s Southern Region championship team, had knee surgery on November 3rd and will miss the rest of the season.
Nicknamed “Nasty”, a term of respect that characterized his play as more effective and efficient than aesthetic, Keilholtz was a walk on player whose grit, hustle, and determination helped earn him a starting position the last ten games of the 2010-11 season. He scored a season high of 24 points when the Cougars clinched the league title in a tough road win over Mt. Hood. He also started and competed well at the NWAACC championship tournament. Keilholtz plans to begin rehabilitation as soon as possible and plans to compete for the Cougars next season.
Said assistant coach Paul Fiskum, “We will really miss him this season. He is just a super kid to coach and a very valuable player for us. He just always makes hustle plays and plays hard. Great team mate, hard worker, and a lot of fun to have on the team. We will work hard with him to get him back for next year.”
November 14, 2011
OREGON CITY -- Clackamas will open the 2012 season with a game at 7 pm Friday, November 18 at Randall Hall vs. the Linfield JV team. The game will be the first and last time the CCC men play at home until December 28 and will be the first time for fans to get a non-scrimmage look at this season’s version of what has grown to become the best basketball program in the northwest junior college circuit.
What can fans expect?
Look for CCC to bounce back from what we have come to consider a disappointing 20-8 season in the 2011 campaign. The Cougars, winners of three of the last five Southern Region Championships and three of the last five NWAACC championships will again mount a legitimate and serious challenge for both titles.
With returning sophomore lettermen Alex Loul, Paul Walter, Josh Lokeno, and Andre Dickson, the addition of solid sophomore transfers Brett Ball and Taylor Dunn, and a solid corps of five freshman backups, Clackamas looks to be a strong candidate to defend its 2011 Southern Region championship.
The 2012 Clackamas team will be deep, balanced, and featuring good size, skill, and athleticism. It could be another banner year for the Cougars this season. A very challenging preseason schedule will put the CCC team on the road a lot, with three tough eight-team tournaments and the challenge of playing many of the best teams in the NWAACC. CCC should be well tested in battle by the time Southern Region play begins in January.
In the South, look for Mt. Hood and Chemeketa to challenge for the title, and for Linn Benton to crash the NWAACC tourney party.

He also played and worked out with Pure Advantage Basketball. He is part of a close knit and supportive athletic family that includes his mom Paula, who played at USF, a brother Garrett, who plays at USC, and a twin brother, Martin, who is studying firefighting. Malcolm wants to pursue engineering as his major.
Said Westview head coach Pat Coons: “He’s just a great kid and team mate. He is a relentless battler on defense and an absolute warrior on the boards. We loved him here; he always played hard and worked hard in practice. He took a lot of pride in his defense and really rebounded at both ends of the floor. He’s really happy at Clackamas, so that’s a great fit.”
CCC head coach Clif Wegner and his staff were excited to have Jackson on the roster, “He was on our list of kids to check out in the spring but he had decided on another school. He was not able to attend there, and wound up coming to CCC pretty late in the process. But we are thrilled to have him. He’s a good, athletic wing with some size, who can also shoot it some and put it one the floor. He is also a really good kid and a hard worker who wants to succeed. He should be able to make the transition from his high post position in high school to more of a perimeter player at the college level.”

OREGON CITY, OR -- CCC’s aspirations to return to the championship summit of NWAACC Men’s Basketball got a huge boost with the team’s announcement of the return of Andre Dickson to the roster for 2011-12 season.
Dickson last played for the Cougars in 2010; he was a starter in the NWAACC Tournament and made a significant contribution in the team’s championship run. He turned in a sensational championship game effort of hustle plays, steals, assists, rebounds, and aggressive offensive and defensive play.
“He was the X Factor at the tourney,” said team mate Justin Steinke. “He did the gritty work: screening, defending, rebounding; but in the championship game he also exploded offensively and just beat people to make huge, key baskets. He broke the other team’s will”
In 2010, Dickson worked his way into the starting line up at the end of the season, peaking during play at the NWAACC Tournament, where he averaged 6 points and 8 rebounds to help spark the team.
“It’s really exciting to get him back in uniform,” added assistant and defensive coordinator Paul Fiskum. “He is such a tremendous defender. Last year he would come in sporadically to practice and even though he was out of shape it still seemed like he won every defensive and rebounding drill and practiced harder than anyone on the floor. He will really make us tougher defensively.”
No one was any happier than head coach Clif Wegner to welcome back his player. “He’s such a great kid, such a hard worker. You just want to help him succeed because he plays his heart out every game and every day. He plays as hard as anyone we have ever had here. He’s super competitive and he is an amazing, explosive athlete. We just got a lot better. He’ll be as good a defender as anybody in the NWAACC and he’s gotten better offensively than when he played with us in 2010. We are all really proud of him for taking care of his business: he worked at different jobs, paid for his own schooling, managed his studies, worked out and balanced a lot of issues himself.”
As for Dickson, the former Madison High School multi sport star is anxious to get back and compete for the Cougars again. “It was really tough to sit and watch last year, but it also made me more hungry to come back and play ball. His big goal: “Not very many players get a chance to win 2 NWAACC championships. I want to come back and get another championship.”
With the return of Dickson, expect the Cougar’s chances of a championship to improve!

Riley Charlish |
OREGON CITY, OR -- Clackamas has signed Riley Charlish, of Portland’s Roosevelt High School to a scholarship to play basketball.
A 5’9 guard, Charlish helped lead Roosevelt to an athletic resurgence, with three consecutive state tournament appearances.
“He can really shoot it and shoot it from deep,” assessed assistant coach Paul Fiskum, who recruited him. “He has about 26’ range, so he can really stretch the defense out and make us harder to guard.”
Charlish averaged 17 points and 5 assists per game his senior season and also maintained honor roll status, graduating with a 3.5 GPA.
During the season, he was honoree as Portland Tribune Player of the Week, PIL player of the year, and 2nd team all 4A Tournament.
Following his senior season, Charlish was named Honorable Mention for All-State 4A and was also selected as the PIL Male Athlete Sportsmen of the Year for Roosevelt.
“I visited a lot of other colleges and had some other scholarship offers, but Clackamas was the best choice: best program, best school, best location, best coach. I could just feel this was where I wanted to be, to stay closer to home and play for a championship.”
Robert Key, his head coach at Roosevelt, had this to say: “Riley is absolutely one of the most improved players I’ve ever coached in 26 years. He carried us this year; it’s been a treat to coach a young man of his character and quality. He does everything a coach could ask for and more. I look forward to seeing him continuing to play and improve.”

Jake DeWitt |
OREGON CITY, OR -- CCC Men’s Basketball has added another sharpshooter to its arsenal of offensive weapons for next year’s team. Jake DeWitt, from Lynden High School in Washington, has accepted a scholarship to come to Clackamas and play for the Cougars.
“We had a great time with him when he visited and he really liked our school and our program,” said CCC head coach Clif Wegner. “Jake is a really nice wing prospect. He can shoot the ball on the perimeter and score going to the hoop as well. He is pretty athletic and can really get up in the air. Great kid and student; he should really be a nice addition to the program.”
A 6’3 wing, Dewitt averaged 15.5 points, 3 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game this year during his senior season. He was selected 1st team all league for the Northwest Conference. He was also an all state game participant in the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association Series showcase for the state’s top senior players. In Dewitt’s junior season, he led his Lynden High School team to a 6th place in the state AA championships.
Dewitt is an honors student with 3.5 GPA; he is undecided about his focus of study but is excited about coming to Clackamas in the fall. He declined scholarship offers at two other top NWAACC schools to opt for CCC.
“When I visited Clackamas, I just loved everything about it: the players, the coaches, the school, the whole set up. I knew I would go there if they wanted me. It took a long time because they were looking at a lot of players; but Coach Wegner called me several times to let me know they still rated me pretty high. Clackamas has an awesome program and I am looking forward to being a part of it. I just want to come in and work hard and contribute and win a championship.”

Brett Ball |
OREGON CITY, OR -- It took quite a while, but Brett Ball is finally coming to Clackamas to play for the Cougars and try to win a championship. He recently signed a letter of intent to play for CCC next season.
“We recruited him as a high school senior in 2009,” said head coach Clif Wegner. “We really liked him; he was tough, physical; he played hard and really competed defensively. He really carried himself like a winner.”
That season, Ball led his team at Hillsboro High School to a an outstanding season and a 4th place finish at the 5A state championships, losing to eventual state champion Jefferson. He was named 1st team all league and 1st team all state in 2009.
After taking a year off of school to lift weights and get stronger, Ball, a 6’7” forward, then accepted a scholarship to play at Eastern Arizona Junior College. After he completed his freshman season this year at EAC, he decided to transfer to Clackamas.
“He’s really a great addition for our team,” said assistant coach Paul Fiskum. “He’s very athletic, bouncy, and you can tell he is really competitive and is going to play hard. He will make us better. He looks and plays like a man, not a kid. He looks to be one of the better players in the league; he should be a pretty good solid D1 or D2 recruit for sure. He’s also a 4.0 GPA kid and that’s always a nice addition too.”
Ball has a familial connection to Clackamas already: his twin sister, Shayla, starred for the CCC women’s basketball team and was the 2010 Southern Region MVP.

Taylor Dunn |
OREGON CITY, OR --The Clackamas Cougars announce the signing of Taylor Dunn for the 2012 season. Dunn, a 6’4, 200 lb. guard, will transfer in as a sophomore from Central Washington University, where he played a back up role on a team that went 26-4 and won the GNAC championship.
Dunn, from Vancouver, Washington, is a 2009 graduate of Mountain View High School; during his senior season, he averaged 20.0 points per game and was selected as the MVP of the Greater St. Helens League. Taylor is the younger brother of Austin Dunn, who fashioned a hall of fame caliber career at CCC, which culminated in his 2009 team’s 29-3 run to Southern Region and NWAACC championships.
“We are really excited to get him,” said head coach Clif Wegner. “He’s long, bouncy, athletic, and can really score the ball. He is also a pretty versatile guard who will make us harder to defend. He is a good size perimeter kid who can really play basketball. Taylor is also a really good student and a great kid to bring in to the program. We see him as making an immediate impact and one of the top players in the league next year. We are looking forward to working with him; he should be highly recruited next year.”
