King Accepts Scholarship to Lincoln University

June 18, 2009

Oregon City, Ore. - It took a while, but Brad King make good on a major goal he set when he came to Clackamas Community College: getting an opportunity to continue to play basketball after junior college.

He has accepted a full ride scholarship to Lincoln University, a Division II school in Jefferson City, Missouri. The scholarship is worth about $17,000 per year and will cover all of King’s college expenses.

The scholarship was publicly announced by CCC president Joanne Truesdell at CCC’s graduation ceremonies on June 12th at Randall Hall.

King had been chosen as a graduating student of profile to honor his exceptional accomplishment in overcoming uncommon and demanding circumstances to achieve excellence in the academic and athletic arenas. He earned his associate's degree this term at Clackamas Community College.

King came to CCC for an opportunity to play basketball and continue his education toward a degree in business. The challenges he had to overcome to learn to play college basketball seemed impossible because he had been cut from his high school team tryouts and never played competitively.

As a 7'1" sophomore this season, he improved tremendously and was a co-captain on the Cougar basketball team, which captured region and northwest championships and set a new CCC season record of 29-3. His leadership was a very positive factor in the team's success.

New Lincoln University head coach John Redmond is expecting a sizable contribution from his sizable new recruit. “We’re not bringing him in just to look good in the hotel lobby. We will need to have him score for us, control the paint, block some shots, and rebound the ball. We have to have him produce.”

The Cougar basketball family is proud of Brad’s accomplishment of working hard to earn a scholarship to continue playing basketball at a four year school while completing his bachelor's degree in business. We wish him the best of luck.

'08 alum Brickley to play for Lewis & Clark

Adam BrickleyMay 28, 2009
Oregon City, Ore - Adam Brickley (CCC '06-'08) has accepted a scholarship to play basketball at Lewis and Clark College in Portland. His combination of academic achievement and basketball skills package earned him a leadership award scholarship worth $28,000 a year at one of the top academic colleges on the west coast.

A 6' 8" post, Brickley has a deadly shooting touch and is a versatile offensive player.

Lewis and Clark assistant basketball coach Dinari Foreman calls Brickley "A perfect fit in the LC system because of his perimeter shooting and fundamental skills. He has a tremendous upside! We are thrilled to get a player from a great winning program that's been drilled in the up tempo style we like to play."

At CCC, Brickley was a reserve member on the Cougars' 2007 Southern Region and NWAACC championship team. As a sophomore in 2008, he averaged 15 points and 7 rebounds in leading Clackamas to a 2nd place finish in the Southern Region and a spot in the NWAACC tournament. He was selected to the Southern Region all star team and also to the NWAACC all sophomore team.

At Lewis and Clark, Brickley will play for Bob Gaillard, a coaching legend in the profession who once coached the University of San Francisco to the pinnacle of Division I basketball and who has, in recent years, built Lewis and Clark into one of the top Division III programs in the northwest. Brickley is projected to be in the starting line up for next season' s opening game vs. the University of Oregon.

Said Coach Wegner: " We are very happy for Adam. It' s always great to see one our kids be able to go on and get to play competitive basketball, especially at a school where he will get a national caliber education as well. He worked very hard at CCC in the classroom and the gym to get that opportunity."

King Selected for CCC Graduation Honor

May 13, 2009

Brad KingOregon City, OR - Brad King was selected to be recognized at Clackamas Community College's graduation ceremony Friday, June 12 at CCC's Randall Hall.

King was chosen as a student of profile to honor his exceptional accomplishment in overcoming uncommon and demanding circumstances to achieve excellence in the academic and athletic arenas. CCC president Joanne Truesdell will recognize and honor King at the ceremony.

Brad came to CCC for an opportunity to play basketball and continue his education toward a degree in business. The challenges he had to overcome to learn to play college basketball seemed impossible because he had been cut from his high school team tryouts and never played competitively.

When he graduated, he was 7'1" tall but had absolutely no basketball experience or skills. He enrolled at CCC and worked very hard to learn and improve. Brad endured a freshman season full of challenges, but he persevered.

As a sophomore this season, he improved tremendously and was a co-captain on the men's basketball team, which captured region and northwest championships and set a new CCC season record of 29-3. His leadership was a very positive factor in the team's success.

These achievements alone would qualify Brad as a special student to profile for CCC, but he has also juggled many other demands that have made his achievements at Clackamas even more remarkable.

In two years at CCC, Brad has maintained close to a 3.0 GPA while carrying a challenging full time academic course load. He also balances marriage and fatherhood, providing for his wife and two year old son.

Moreover, he also works as project manager for commercial buildings, where he often logs 40 hour work weeks. He also teaches a Sunday school class at his church and has been active in many service activities in the community.

Brad is earning his associate's degree this term at Clackamas Community College. He is also still undergoing basketball recruiting process. He remains hopeful of earning a scholarship to continue playing basketball at a four year school while completing his bachelor's degree in business.

Wilde signs with Hawaii Hilo University

May 6, 2009

Oregon City, Ore. - Zach Wilde became the third Cougar off this year's championship team to accept a full ride basketball scholarship. The Cougars' 6' 7" freshman post, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Hawaii Hilo University. Wilde, from Snohomish High School, stared all 32 games on this season' s 29-3 team and was named to the all-freshman team in the Southern region. He averaged 7.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists, and 23 minutes for the year.

Said Coach Wegner: "We're happy for him because that was one of his big goals when he came to CCC: to earn a scholarship at a university and earn his bachelor's degree. He really wanted to be at a university with that kind of campus life and he had already accomplished the ultimate team achievements at this level. He was really a big part of our team, as a versatile post player that was an outstanding passer. We all would love to have him back to defend our championships, but we all celebrate his fortune and wish him the best. It's a great scholarship that will cover all of his education for his bachelor's degree."

Hawaii Hilo is a Division II school that competes in the Pacific West Conference. The Vulcans finished the 2009 season at 15-12 overall and tied 7-5 in league games to tie for third in the conference. Wilde is projected to come in and compete for a starting spot in the Hilo line up.

Incidentally, Wilde is the latest in a long line of Clackamas Cougars to earn basketball scholarships to schools in the Hawaiian Islands. He follows Mark Campbell ('01) and Michael Kuebler ('02) who starred at the University of Hawaii, and Nate Block ('01), Marvin Noble Jr. ('02) and Alex Swerzbin ('04) who all played at Hawaii Pacific University.

Dunn Accepts Basketball Scholarship to Central Washington University

April 28, 2009

Image of Austin DunnOregon City, Ore. - All Star guard Austin Dunn, the Cougars' 6' 3" sophomore, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Central Washington University.

Dunn, from Mountain View High in Vancouver, WA, led the 2009 Cougar team to an NWAACC championship, an all time school best 29-3 record, and a Southern Region (13-1) title as well. He was also named to the Southern Region 1st team and the NWAACC tournament first team.

In 2008, Dunn was selected to the Southern Region 2nd team while helping that Cougar team to a 2nd place finish in the region. As a freshman, he averaged 19.9 ppg. This year, he fashioned a stellar season in which he developed into one of the top all around NWAACC guards. He finished among the NWAACC leaders in scoring and assists both seasons he played at Clackamas.

Said Coach Wegner: "Austin had a sensational career at CCC and has really developed as an excellent all around college guard. He's a scorer with a nice skill package, is versatile enough to play all three perimeter spots effectively, and he can defend and rebound at championship level. I really think he is the most underrated and under-appreciated guard in the Northwest; he's so consistent and steady. He was absolutely pivotal in leading us to the title. At the NWAACC tournament, he was sensational all four games; he just kept making big play after big play. We're proud of him thrilled for him; he deserves it. It's a really nice scholarship that will cover virtually all of his education for his bachelor's degree."

Dunn was actively recruited by more than 20 colleges at the NAIA and NCAA levels because of his play at CCC.

At Central Washington, Dunn will continue to play with JC Cook, his Cougar backcourt mate at Clackamas. Together, they will combine with former NWAACC stars Toussaint Tyler and Chris Sprinkler (Tacoma CC), Chris Scott (South Puget Sound CC), and Brandon Foote (Whatcom CC). It should make for a pretty strong NWAACC flavor in Ellensburg!

Central Washington has been one of the top Division II schools on the west coast, with a consistently proud competitive tradition of excellence that dates back 50 seasons. They have also finished 2nd in the conference each of the past two seasons and have qualified for the Western Regionals in three for the last four years.

Cook Signs With Central Washington University

April 16, 2009

Oregon City, Ore. - JC Cook, the Cougars' 6' 1" sophomore guard, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Central Washington University.

Cook, from Canby, led the 2009 Cougar team to an NWAACC championship, an all time best 29-3 record, and a Southern Region (13-1) title as well. He was also named the Southern Region MVP and on the NWAACC all tournament team.

In 2008, he was selected to the Southern Region 1st team while helping his team to a 2nd place finish in the region. As a freshman, he was one of the top scorers in the NWAACC, averaging 21.7 ppg, then backed it up by averaging 19.1 ppg as a sophomore. He also finished among the NWAACC leaders in steals and assists both seasons.

Said Coach Wegner: "JC is one of the most exciting and explosive players to ever play at CCC. I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching him and watching him play. He lays it out on the line every game; he is a warrior. He has always played like a champion for us; I was thrilled for him and his team mates this season because that championship is forever. Hopefully, he will be able to help take Central to a title as well. It's a great scholarship, covering all his education and costs. He deserves it; he's worked really hard in the gym, the classroom, and the weight room to get there. They are getting a great player who is also a great kid. He will be missed here; that's for sure. The entire Cougar family and community wishes him well and looks forward to watching him continue his playing career."

Cook was actively recruited by more than 20 Division I and Division II schools.

At Central, he joins a program that has been one of the top Division II schools on the west coast. The Wildcats have a consistently proud competitive tradition of excellence that dates back 50 seasons. They have also finished 2nd in the conference each of the past two seasons and have qualified for the Western Regionals in three for the last four years.

At CWU, he will join former NWAACC stars Toussaint Tyler and Chris Sprinkler (Tacoma CC), Chris Scott (South Puget Sound CC), and Brandon Foote (Whatcom CC.)

Clackamas men complete NWAACC title run

By Ben Reynolds, Tri-City Herald staff writer

2009 NWAACC Champions :: Clackamas Cougars

KENNEWICK, WA -- It just wouldn't have been right if the men's championship game ended in regulation.

After Clackamas survived two overtimes Saturday night to beat defending champion Yakima Valley and Lower Columbia needed some extra time to beat Highline, the two teams needed an extra five minutes to settle the final Sunday night.

And this one wasn't decided until the final half-second.

Lower Columbia's Alex King had his catch-and-shoot fall short at the horn and top-ranked Clackamas survived in a 71-69 thriller at Toyota Center.

"Nobody can say we had and easy road," said Clackamas coach Clif Wegner said.

Chehales Tapscott Tournament MVPIt is the second title in three seasons for the Cougars (29-3).

Lower Columbia (20-11), the tournament underdog, was the first No. 4 seed to reach the championship game since Highline in 2001.

After the game, coach Jim Roffler was not happy just to have his team reach the title game for the third time in six seasons.

"We should have got some better shots down the stretch," he said. "It was there for the taking."

Tournament most valuable player Chehales Tapscott scored 18 points and grabbed a team-high 16 rebounds. Austin Dunn led the Cougars with 19 points, including five of his team's eight points in overtime.

"We're all a little tired right now, but this feels great," Tapscott said.

The win also had sentimental meaning for the Cougars, who lost longtime assistant coach Jim Worden earlier this year to cancer.

"This is for Jimmy," said Wegner, whose players wore Worden's initials on their jerseys.

Clackamas' road to the title game was filled with close calls like Sunday night.

In the opening round, the Cougars went down to the final minutes before beating Whatcom. Then, they found a way to rally past third-ranked Tacoma in the semifinals.

And then Saturday night, they needed an extra 10 minutes get past fifth-ranked Yakima. Finally, they dodged a late 3-pointer at the end of regulation, and a short jump shot that came up empty in overtime. The Cougars won their four games by a combined 24 points.

"We had a hell of a path to go through to get here." Wegner said.

Lower Columbia, which trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half, had the ball with 16.9 seconds left in regulation and the game tied at 63.

That was despite shooting just 27-of-74 (36 percent) from the floor, and included just 3 of 23 shooting from Ryan Freeman and Marice Tolliver, two of the Red Devils leading scores. The two finished with a combined eight points, after averaing 26 points per game.

Jeray Key led Lower Columbia with 21 points and Alex King added 15 points and 13 rebounds.

"It should have never came down (to the last play)," Roffler said.

Clackamas Win; Finishes 13-1 in Southern Division; Finish Season Unbeaten at Home.

2008-09 Sophomores, coaches & FamiliesFebruary 25, 2009
JC Cook scorches the Pathers for 30pts in the first halfOregon City, OR - CCC wrapped up a sensastional regular season, beating Portland 106-76 to win the Southern Division title with a 13-1 mark. The Cougars finished the regular season 25-3 and ranked #1 in the NWAACC. The home win, on Sophomore Night, also kept the Clackamas record perfect for the season at Randall Hall, where they finished 15-0. CCC will represent the South as the #1 seed in the NWAACC Championships in Kennewick, Washington March 5-8.

The evening began with a celebration honoring of the five Cougar sophomores: Jonny Brainard, JC Cook, Austin Dunn, Brad King, and Scott Martin. All the sophomores are 2 year lettermen at CCC, all are on track to graduate with associates degrees, all plan on pursuing bachelorâ s degrees, and all plan on continuing to play college basketball. They have done a consistently superb job of representing the Clackamas Community College. They have been a great part of the Cougar basketball program and will always remain part of the Cougar family!

Cougars FansClackamas wasted no time in jumping all over the Panthers, pressing, trapping and running the visitors up and down the floor. The Cougars attacked in waves, with all 12 players seeing action and all 12 showing up in the scoring column. JC Cook put on a sensational offensive display, exploding for 30 points in the first half. It was Clackamas 57, Portland 40 at the half. It was more of the same in the second half, as the CCC bench outscored PCCâ s reserves 52-19.

Cook finished the evening with 35 points, hitting 7 of 8 threes and also getting 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals. Chehales Tapscott nailed 7 of 8 free throws and hit 6 of 9 field goals to score 19 points, grab 7 rebounds, block 2 shots, and get 3 steals. Austin Dunn had 9 points and 5 assists. Jeff Dorman had 8 points and 6 assists. Zach Wilde scored 7 points and gabbed 6 rebounds. Justin Steinke scored 10 points to go with 2 rebounds and 2 assists. EJ Manley scored 5 points and hustled for 5 rebounds. And Brad King got 5 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots. The Clackamas squad, in its final tune-up for the NWAACC Tournament, shot 57% from the floor, 48% from the arc, and 80% from the free throw line.

Next Game: The NWAACC Championships, March 5-8 in Kennewick, WA. Clackamas plays at 6 pm March 5 vs. Whatcom College.

'Coach Hal' Joins Cougar Team for a Day

February 21, 2008
Coach HalOregon City, OR - Long time CCC supporter Hal Carlile joined the Cougar coaching staff for the day to help the Clackamas team to a 100-51 win over Umpqua Community College.

Carlile, a retired school administrator and Cougar loyalist, has been a supporter of Cougar athletics for over 20 years.

"He's always been so great for our kids to be around; he's such a wealth of knowledge and perspective for all of us," said Coach Wegner. "He talked to the team before the game about how you should react when you go through adversity or failure. He shared some of his life experiences and how they helped make him stronger and more determined. I think it helped the team put the loss behind them and focus in a positive way."

"He comes to practices and games and we all love to see him. Our kids love him and he's just great with them," says assistant coach Jeremiah Dalton. "All the stuff he's learned in his life; that stuff is priceless."

Sophomore guard Jonny Brainard: "I've known him since grade school; he was my neighbor back then. Everybody loves seeing him. He's always been so supportive and encouraging, but he never wants anything except your best when you compete."

Added Coach Wegner: "It's just great for our players to be around someone like him; great for them to see someone that age can be so energetic, and vibrant and passionate about life. He's completive as heck, even still! At the end our halftime talk, he jumped up and clenched his fists and yelled to the players to 'kick their butts,' the team yelled so loud the room shook. It was pretty good stuff!"

While the Cougars kept their 14-game home win streak alive, Coach Hal also kept his streak alive. This was his 4th game as a CCC assistant coach and he is a perfect 4-0.

Clackamas clinches South title and #1 seed

J.c CookFebruary 21, 2009
Oregon City, OR - There is an old adage in sports that a team never wants play a really good team that is coming off a loss. Umpqua looked like a team in the wrong place in the wrong time as Clackamas bounced back from a tough loss earlier in the week to smash the visiting Riverhawks, 100-51.

The top-ranked Cougars remained alone atop the Southern Division (12-1, 24-3.) and one game up on Mt. Hood with one game to go. The lop-sided victory clinched a tie for the Southern Division Championship and the #1 seed from the South in the NWAACC Championships in Kennewick, Washington March 5-8.

Clackamas wasted no time in jumping all over the Riverhawks, pressing, trapping and running the visitors to exhaustion. The Cougars attacked in waves, with all 12 players seeing action and 10 showing up in the scoring column.

Baseball coach Robin Robinson demonstrates swing dance wit hstudent at half timeThe win helped erase the taste of a bitter loss earlier in the weak that broke a 16 game win streak and gave CCC its only loss in league play.

"I had a sense that we were going to play really hard," said Coach Wegner. "After the loss Wednesday, we had two very good, hard, focused practices. You could tell the kids were pretty intent on getting back to playing the way we need to and doing the little things that really good teams do. We didn't shoot it all that well and we still gave up too many easy baskets, but the kids played pretty hard and did a great job with passing and catching the ball, rebounding, and defensive pressure."

Co-captain Austin Dunn: "It was great to get a big win and have the team bounce back so well together. We got back to basics in practice the last days and we got back to playing better basketball tonight."

Added co-captain Brad King: "It was big because it assures us the #1 seed. One of our team goals this year was to win the Southern Division title, so that feels great. Now we want to finish with a big win in our last game; we don't want to share the league title with some other school."

A smothering Cougar defense held the UCC team to 37% shooting and not a single three pointer while harassing the Riverhawks into 31 turnovers. CCC committed only 10 turnovers on the night whle also registering 28 assists.

Clackamas dominated the glass, getting 55 rebounds to 31 for Umpqua. The Cougars have a whopping 28 rebounds on the offensive glass and 25 second chance points.

Five Cougars reached double figure scoring, led by freshman star Chehales Tapscott, who put on a show to the delight of the Century High School basketball team and coaches in the stands. His former team mates saw him score 21 points, grab 12 rebounds, dish 3 assists, and block 2 shots.

Josh Weatherman also showed his former Century Jaguar teammates some game, with 6 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocked shots. JC Cook hit for 19 points to go with 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals.

Austin Dunn had a tough defensive assignment, but also showed up for 14 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Zach Wilde scored 5 points, had 9 rebounds, and also tallied 3 assists.

Shane Fife was a huge infusion of energy to ignite the CCC team both halves. In 15 minutes of play, the freshman guard was all over the court for 7 rebounds, a steal, a blocked shot, and 5 assists with no turnovers.

Scott Martin also played well of the bench, scoring 12 points to go with 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.

All told, the CCC bench out scored its UCC counterparts by a 36-11 tally.

Next Game: Clackamas hosts Portland Community College in its final home game of the season, February 25 at 7:30 pm in Randall Hall. It will be Sophomore Night for five second year Cougar players (Dunn, Cook, King, Martin & Jonny Brainard, . The team will also be seeking to finish a perfect 15-0 at home this season and clinch the Southern Division outright.

Clackamas Win Streak Snapped at 16 Games

February 18, 2009
Gresham, OR - Clackamas left the floor on the wrong side of the winning score for the first time in over two months, falling to the Mt. Hood Saints 94-87.

Although the loss dashed the Cougars' chance for a Southern Division sweep, the top-ranked Cougars remained alone atop the division (11-1, 23-3) and one game up on Mt. Hood with two games to go.

The Cougars have already qualified for the NWAACC Championships in Kennewick, Washington March 5-8 and can clinch a tie for the Southern Division Championship and the #1 seed with a home win against Umpqua in Saturday's matchup at Clackamas.

The Cougars played a perpexingly flat first half, trailing the whole way and finding themselves on the short end of a 40-32 half time score. The Saints were beating the Cougars up and down the floor and to most of the rebounds and loose balls.

"To be honest, we've gotten away with a number of poor 1st half performances lately where we have been able to come out in the second half and turn it up and put lesser teams away," said Coach Wegner. "But tonight we came up against a team that was motivated and played well. We struggled shooting the ball, but a lot of that was because our offense was not very crisp and energetic. Consequently, we did not get as many great shots as we have been creating."

CCC fell behind 54-36 five minutes into the second half. The real Cougars finally showed up with their game, mounting a furious comeback and scoring 51 points in the final 15 minutes; but they could never catch the home team.

The game came down to the last minute and pair of possessions, but Clackamas could not steal the game away. A big missed three, a controversial call, and a couple MHCC offensive rebounds kept the Cougars at bay at the end.

It was a bitter loss for the Cougars: it not only snapped a sixteen game win streak that dated back to December, it also delayed a League Championship celebration; a Clackamas win would have clinched the title and the #1 seed.

Co-captain JC Cook spoke for the team: "I think this will help us later. These guys are all winners and it really hurt to lose. I think we will play and practice harder the rest of the way. We are all committed to hanging a banner up together in the gym."

Assistant Coach Jeremiah Dalton agreed: "I think it was a wake up call to the kids. We have been telling them to come out playing harder, but tonight they got the lesson handed to them. They will learn and bounce back, though. Our kids hate losing."

The game may as well have been played at the actual Mt. Hood as a frigid shooting night kept the CCC team from its usual explosive runs until the last 15 minutes. The Cougar team shot a poor 41% from the field. Normally one of the top 3 point shooting teams in the Northwest, Clackamas could only manage to make 5 of 24 three point attempts.

The Clackamas scoring attack was led by freshman star Chehales Tapscott, who turned in another dominating game. Despite being the focal point of the Mt. Hood defense, he still hit 11 of 22 field goals and 7 of 9 free throws to finish the night with 29 points, 13 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.

JC Cook struggle with his jump shot, but managed 17 points, making 7 of 7 free throws; he also got 2 rebounds, 7 assists, and 4 steals.

Austin Dunn also helped give CCC a chance to win, making a lot of big plays down the stretch run of the wild finish. He tallied 19 points on 8 of 15 shooting while also getting 3 steals, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds.

Jeff Dorman also struggled to find his usually reliable jump shot, but contributed with 8 points and 3 assists.

All in all, it was not a night of great performances for the Cougar squad.

Clackamas runs Southern Division record to 11-0; Downs Lane 87-54

February 14, 2009
Oregon City, OR - The CCC Cougars overran the Lane Community College Titans 87-54 with a solid team performance, despite a poor shooting night for the Clackamas squad. The top-ranked Cougars remained alone atop the Southern Division (11-0, 23-2.) Additionally, they kept alive their current 16-game win streak, the longest in the NWAACC. The Cougars have already qualified for the NWAACC Championships in Kennewick, Washington March 5-9.

A cold shooting night kept the CCC team well below its season average (101 points per game) The Cougar team shot a so-so 45% from the field, 33% from the arc, and a frustrating 58% from the free throw line. But Clackamas played hard in its uptempo pressure game and did a better job passing and catching the basketball, forcing 25 turnovers and only committing 15. CCC had 19 steals, led by JC Cook, with 5. Clackamas converted Titan turnovers into 33 fast break points with some pinpoint open court passing. The Cougars found each other for 26 assists on the night. The Cougars were also all over the Titans for rebounds, by a 56-35 advantage.

The Clackamas scoring attack, featured four players hitting for double figures. Chehales Tapscott turned in another dominating game, with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 steals. Tapscott hit on 10 of 13 shots from the field and 6 of 7 free throws. JC Cook lit up Lane for 19 points, making 7 of 13 shots and 3 of 4 treys; he also got 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals. And Jonny Brainard continued to provide offensive production off the bench; Brainard hit 3 of 5 treys and finished with 11 points. Jeff Dorman struggled to find his usually reliable jump shot, but contributed to the win with 11 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, and 7 assists. Austin Dunn had 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 assists. And Zach Wilde grabbed 8 rebounds, and also had 3 assists and 2 blocked shots. Reserve wing Justin Steinke chipped in 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals. #4 Ranked Cougars (11-2) win 107-102 shootout over Walla Walla; Meet #1 ranked Tacoma in Final

December 30, 2008

J.C. Cook hits the three with 23 seconds in the gameOregon City - The Cougar family clung together in the afternoon for an emotional farewell to Coach Jim Worden, celebrating his life with tears, hugs, and stories in a moving memorial to A LIFE WELL LIVED. Then they regrouped that evening to honor him the best way they knew he would love: playing better basketball....

CCC withstood the red-hot shooting of the Warriors (8-1 and ranked #7 in the NWAACC) who scored 51 points on a sizzling 17-35 display of marksmanship from the 3 point line. WWCC hit 9 of its 14 first half threes, but still CCC stayed close, trailing 48-44 at the break.

The Cougars opened the second half with an intense and aggressive onslaught, riding a 25-9 run to a 69-55 lead. But the Warriors kept draining those 3s and eventually got back into the game, leading 96-92 down the stretch. However, the Cougars, who had dedicated this game to Coach Jim Worden, simply would not be defeated.

A 15-6 closing run was sparked by the inside play of Chehales Tapscott, who was unstoppable down the stretch; he finished with 32 points, 16 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 blocks, and 3 steals.

The dagger would be JC Cook's 3 pointer with 23 seconds to play, putting CCC up 104-100. Cook had 24 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists.

Jeff Dorman hit all 8 field goals and all 3 of his threes for 21 points, 6 rebounds, and 8 assists. Justin Steinke infused the team with energy and hustle off the bench, tallying 12 points, 3 rebounds, and some in-your-face defense.

Scott Martin hustled his way for 5 points and 7 rebounds, as did Zach Wilde, who also dished out 4 assists.

Clackamas was without the services of all Southern Division guard Austin Dunn, who sat out the game with an injury. But Jonny Brainard, EJ Manley, and Shane Fife all gave the CCC team good, solid minutes at the guard spots.

CCC managed 26 assists with only 15 turnovers, shot 54% from the floor and 46% from the arc in the win. The Cougars also clawed their way to a 50-37 margin in rebounds. Coach Worden would have loved the HEART shown by the Cougars (and also the rebounds!) [box score]

Next up: The Cougars (11-2) will take on top ranked Tacoma (11-0) in the championship game of the CCC Holiday Tournament.

Scott Martin delivers two of his 10 points in a double-double performanceDecember 29, 2008

Oregon City, OR - The game was a sloppy match up of two teams that looked like they had spent the previous week munching on holiday treats and lounging around housebound during one of the most severe winter storms to hit the area in many years.

Jedd DormanDes Moines, WA - In day two of the tournament, CCC was paired with the Everett College Trojans (2-7) of the Northern Division. The Cougars previously fefeated the Trojans 107-79 on Novemeber 30th at the Red Devil Classic.

The Cougars came out defensively all over the floor, holding the Trojans to just 3 points in the first 11 minutes to take a 19-3 lead.

CCC did not shoot the ball well early in the game, with the exception of Jeff Dorman, who hit his first 5 shots, for a 12 quick points to start the game; he had 16 points as half time to lead CCC to a 43-20 lead.

As a team, Clackamas hit only a third of its threes and half of its free throws in that ugly first half.

Through the second half, the Couagrs held a 20 point cushion, when another Clackamas assault pushed the margin to 85-45 with seven minutes to go. Game over.

CCC never trailed in the game and displayed a new found energy level on defense. Sharp team passing resulted in 32 team assists. The Cougars lead the NWAACC in assists. Clackamas also had 19 steals and converted them into 29 fast break points. [box score] [NWAACC stats]

It seemed like a defining moment in the preseason, with Clackamas clearly showing the potential to be one of the elite teams in the NWAACC.

Next up: The Cougars (9-2) will play Blue Mountain at 7 pm on Sunday, December 28th at Randall Hall in the CCC Holiday Tournament. The two teams played last year in the pre season at Pendleton, with the Timberwolves prevailing at home.

#3 Ranked Cougars bounce back with win over Peninsula
Play Everett Saturday at Highline Crossover

December 19, 2008

Des Moines, WA - Bad weather caused two of the teams to drop out of the 8 team tournament, necessitating some creative last minute scrambling. CCC wound up in a match up with perennial NWAACC Northern Division power Peninsula from Port Angeles, Washington.

The first half was very close and hotly contested, as both teams traded punches; the Pirates clung to a 33-32 lead at the break. Martin grabbed 4 rebounds and had 3 assists. Steinke, in his first appearance of the season, was a bundle of energy on defense and chipped in 4 points.

And Freshman guard Shane Fife chipped in 3 assists and 3 steals.

With Cook heating up in the second half, converting on 11 of 14 shots, the Cougars stretched their lead out to 89-74. It was 98-90 with 22 seconds left when things got a bit more interesting. Yakima 87, Clackamas 86
Saturday, November 29 - This game featured a match up of the last two NWAACC championship programs, Clackamas having won the title in 2007 and Yakima usurping the trophy last season. This was a ' growing up game' for the young Cougars, who featured 3 freshman in the starting line up.

The game was a hard-fought, physical, and intense game that produced 10 ties and ten lead changes, mostly down the final 5 minute stretch. Five lead changes occurred in the last 42 seconds of the contest.

Austin Dunn hit a clutch jump shot to put the Cougars up by 1 with 9.9 seconds left, but Yakima countered with a rebound put back inside 2 seconds to win it. CCC held the game's largest lead, at 62-50 mid way through the second half, but really hurt itself with turnovers, missed free throws, and shoddy execution of plays. Austin Dunn pace the Clackamas offensive attack, with 24 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.

Chehales Tapscott rang up 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 assists. JC Cook darted around for 14 points and 5 rebounds. Jeff Dorman was good for 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists. Zach Wilde registered 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Normally an excellent shooting team, the Cougars were inexplicably inept at the free throw line, hitting only 15 of 28 for the game. 19 CCC turnovers were converted into 25 points for the Yaks.

The contest was a heartbreaking loss for the Clackamas squad, but also offered many lessons that will serve to make the Cougars better over the course of the season.

Cougars open 2008-09 campaign with a 101-76 rout of Linfield JV

Novemeber 22, 2008

The Cougars opened their 2008-2009 season with a home win, soundly defeating the Linfield College JV team, 101-76. [box score]

Clackamas opened an early double digit lead that ballooned to 42-23, before getting careless with defense and ballhandling. They settled for a 44-29 half-time lead. CCC came out more aggressively after half-time, pushing the lead to 70-40.

For the most part the Cougars played hard and tried to play as a team. They showed some potential and promise for the future. At times, they were entertaining and exciting. They drew 3 charges, scrapped for 21 offensive boards, were diving on the floor and out of bounds competing for loose basketballs.

Often though, the play was pretty ragged and sloppy, looking every bit like the first contest for both teams that it was: the two teams combined for 55 free throws, 51 fouls, and 36 turnovers.

Sophomore guard Austin Dunn was solid and a steadying influence on the floor, playing all over the Cougar backcourt. He finished the night with 20 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals. JC Cook tallied 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists before being forced from the game with an injury. The extent is unknown, but hopefully not too serious.

Sophomore returning guard Jonny Brainard was perfect from the all over the floor, scoring 11 points and not missing a shot all night. He also grabbed 3 rebounds and dished off the ball for a pair of assists. Chehales Tapscott opened his college career on an auspicious note, making 14 of 24 shots and finishing with 32 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots.

Freshman point guard Jeff Dorman also played well in his initial college game, finishing with 15 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Clackamas also got 15 good minutes from sophomore post Brad King. At 7' 1 and a more svelte 285 pounds, he showed flashes of how much improvement he has made over last season. King scored 5 points and grabbed 4 rebounds, while blocking 7 shots and changing several others.

Freshman post Zach Wilde also showed some flashes of promise, competing for 9 rebounds, dishing out 5 assists, taking a charge, blocking 2 shots, and scoring 4 points.

Look for the Cougars to improve dramatically this season, as they are quite talented, but also quite young. This game's starting line up featured 3 freshman: Tapscott, Dorman, and Wilde. Three other Cougars also played their first college basketball game tonight: Shane Fife, EJ Manley, and Josh Weatherman. The CCC squad should become more formidable and cohesiveness as it gains experience and maturity. It should also get Scott Martin back for its next contest, healthy and fully recovered from his injury.

The Cougars are next in action at the Red Devil Classic basketball tournament in Longview, Washington at 3 pm November 28 vs. Grays Harbor College. Clackamas will be seeking to win the Red Devil Tournament for the 8th time.

Tapscott ready to make his mark
on Cougar Country

November 5, 2008

Chehales TapscottOregon City - This season, Clackamas Community College is expecting big things from Chehales Tapscott.

After a brilliant senior year at Century High School in Hillsboro where he averaged 22.8 points per game, Tapscott was selected to the Oregonian’s first team all state 5A squad. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound forward was highly sought after by over 30 colleges, with over 20 scholarship offers from schools in the NWAACC, from NJCAA colleges across the nation, and a number or Division I colleges and universities.

Tapscott selected Clackamas for a variety of reasons. “I really needed to get my academics together before I went to a D-1. Clackamas has a great reputation and we had had some other Century players go here and really speak highly of Coach Wegner and his program here. I was also excited about the up tempo style of basketball they play; it really looked like a lot of fun.

At CCC, Tapscott joins a succession of Century High stars David Cernin (all state, all Southern Region, all NWAACC, now at Cal Baptist in Riverside, CA), as well as JohnPaul Hafez, and redshirt freshman Josh Weatherman.

“We have had great luck with all the kids that played for Scott Kellar at Century High," said Coach Clif Wegner. "It’s really an excellent school and basketball program. I saw them play several times and I felt that Chehales was a Division I kid. We just tried to stay in contact and be supportive. When he decided to go the junior college route, we really had a lot to offer and were able to out-recruit a lot of really good programs. I think he is probably the most highly recruited kid we have ever signed.”

Portland State University coach Ken Bone, who took the Vikings to Big Sky league and tournament championships and an NCAA Tournament matchup with national champion Kansas, has a scholarship awaiting Tapscott when he completes his associate’s degree at Clackamas.

For his part, Tapscott is equally excited about the opportunity to play Division I basketball in a winning program close to home.

Meanwhile, Cougar fans will have a special player to watch the next couple
seasons.

“Chehales has a great deal of physical talent and athleticism," added Wegner. "We feel that if he really drives himself, he can be a very high-caliber Division I player and a great shot to play professionally after that.

"We’ve seen professional players that started out in the NWAACC, such as Michael Kuebler (CCC, 2002, now playing in Poland) and Chehales has a legitimate chance to do that as well. If he improves his shooting and continues to develop his all-around game and strength and quickness, he will have the whole package for his game.

"So far, he’s been a great kid to work with and I am really looking forward to coaching him. I think he could really could be a very special player.”

Cougars add 4A league Player of the Year
Prairie's Jeff Dorman commits to play for Clackamas

Jeff DormanSept 12, 2008

Oregon City, OR - Vancouver basketball star Jeff Dorman has signed to play his college basketball for NWAACC basketball power Clackamas Community College. The 6' 3" all around athlete starred in football and basketball at Prairie High School.

He was highly recruited by Northwest colleges at the NWAACC, NAIA, and NCAA Division II levels. He was lured by the competitiveness of NWAACC Basketball and the dominating success of the Cougar program and tradition.

Dorman was selected as the 4A player of the year for the Greater Saint Helens League. He is a combo guard who will play at the point and wing positions at CCC. The Cougars like his defense and toughness, his understanding of the game, and his competitiveness. Last season, he led his Prairie High team to the state tournament and averaged 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists per game.

Dorman's basketball experience at Prairie High was a model of consistent success: along with his new Clackamas Cougar team mate, Zach Wilde of Snohomish, Dorman is one of only a few players in the 106 year history of the state to compete in four state basketball tournaments in the large school classification. His Prairie team placed at the state tournament in both his freshman and junior years.

Dorman, a versatile athlete, was also an all-league football quarterback who broke 3 passing records at Prairie High school. He also maintained a 3.4 GPA as a high school student

Jeff Sego signs at Concordia University

Will reunite with '07 alumni Steven Vaughan

June 03, 2008

image of Jeff SegoClackamas Cougar Jeff Sego has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Concordia University in Portland, Oregon, one of the top NAIA men' s basketball programs in the Northwest.

Sego earned a combination athletic and academic scholarship based on his success at CCC in both disciplines. He joins a Concordia program that has qualified for post-season play the last 13 consecutive seasons under the direction of Coach Brad Barbarick, a former NWAACC coach who has consistently recruited the junior college circuit for exceptional student-athletes.

At Concordia, Sego will be reunited with former Cougar Steven Vaughan (CCC, 2007). Vaughan was an all-region and all-NWAACC performer who helped lead his two Cougar teams to a 50-16 region and Southern Region and NWAACC championships.

As a freshman, Sego earned a spot on the 2007 Cougar squad that finished 29-4, captured the Southern Region and NWAACC Championships, and registered the most single season wins in Clackamas' long and storied history of men' s basketball.

As a sophomore, he earned a full athletic scholarship, served as team captain and starting point guard, and also was among the NWAACC leaders in assists. He helped lead his team to a respectable 18-14 record, making a run at the Region title (finishing 2nd), and qualifying for an NWAACC-leading 8th consecutive tournament appearance!

In his sophomore season, Jeff shot 73% from the free throw line and averaged 4.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game.

At CCC, his teams won a combined 47 games against only 18 losses. He also excelled in the classroom at CCC, achieving a nifty 3.64 GPA while earning his associate' s degree this spring. He was named to the NWAACC Scholar Athlete team this season.

Coach Wegner' s reflection: ' Jeff came to CCC as a walk on player who worked very hard for the team and equally hard on his own game. He has been a tremendous kid for our program and I am sure he will make a significant and positive impact at Concordia as well. It' s been really great to see a kid come to CCC as a walk-on, earn a scholarship here, and leave as a young man with a scholarship to an excellent university. I think he really maximized his athletic and academic opportunities at Clackamas Community College. He epitomizes many of the great aspects of a community college education. It' s been great to watch him grow as a player, scholar, leader, and as a person.'

Cougars sign Washington prep star Zach Wilde

May 26, 2008

Zach WildeZach Wilde of Snohomish High School has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for Clackamas Community College. Wilde was a highly recruited 6' 7" Seattle area star who just completed an outstanding high school career.

As a captain this year, he led his team a 15-1 league record, winning the Wesco North championship, district championship, and qualifying for the state tournament. He led his team in scoring (16 points per game), assists (4 per game), and rebounds (7 per game).

He was named the Everett Herald's all area player of the year and was also selected as his Snohomish High team MVP. The Snohomish County Referees also selected him for their area player of year award. Wilde was a four year letter winner at Snohomish High School, and, as a freshman, played with University of Washington star Jon Brockman.

Wilde is the only player in 106 years of Washington High School basketball to play in the state tournament all four years in the large school classification! His teams placed 7th in 2005 and 5th in 2007.

He was a three year starter and led his team in assists for those three years. In his four years at Snohomish, his teams won an impressive total of 87 games, including 46-8 in league play. Wilde's teams won the conference for 4 straight years. He leaves Snohomish High School as its all time leader in assists.

CCC is very pleased to welcome Zach Wilde to the Cougar program, where his size, athleticism, and passing and shooting skills should be a great fit for the up tempo running attack that has become synonymous with Clackamas basketball. His inside/outside game will be well utilized in CCC's versatile offensive attack.

Mountain View grad quickly adjusts to college basketball

Thursday, February 21, 2008
By SOMER BREEZE, Columbian staff writer

Austin DunnAustin Dunn is playing basketball for a different school, at a different level, and in a different state, than he did a year ago.

But one factor has remained the same. The 6-foot-4 freshman wing for the Clackamas Community College men's basketball team is still averaging double figures in scoring. In fact, his average is even a little bit better than his high school numbers.

"I would have been surprised if last year at this time you had told me I'd be averaging more points and rebounds at a higher level than I was in high school," Dunn said.

Dunn averaged between 17 and 18 points per game his senior year at Mountain View High School. For the Cougars, he is second on the team in scoring, averaging 18.5 points, and is shooting 54.3 percent from the field. The freshman also is averaging 4.8 rebounds.

But after intermission, it was all Peninsula, as they opened the the second half with a 19-2 run that totally changed the game around. Finding themselves down 54-45, the Cougars tried to play catch up ball for the the rest of the half, but could never get over the hump, cutting the lead to 4 points with 90 seconds to play, but failing to make the critical defensive stops necessary.

Clackamas committed 27 turnovers, failing to execute offensively all game long. Nov 25th - Clackamas 89 Everett 81 (box)
The Cougars (2-2) got back on track and evened it season record in the third place game of the tournament. For the third game in four contests, the young CCC squad jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the skirmish. But Clackamas is still trying to learn how to keep teams down once they have them down: the Trojans battled back steadily, bombing from deep and pounding the Cougars on the offensive boards to close the margin to 45-44 at the intermission.

JC Cook hit 7 of 9 field goals for 16 points and Adam Brickley contributed 13 points and 5 rebounds to lead the CCC 1st half effort. Clackamas started the second half in a funk, quickly finding itself on the wrong end of a 62-49 deficit. But after a time-out to regroup, the Cougars started steadily clawing back into the game. They started attacking with penetration, getting to the free throw line, and defending more consistently at the other end of the floor.

CCC finally tied the score at 75-75, then slowly increased their lead and put the game away. Jeff Sego's 3 pointer put CCC up by 8 with a minute to go, closing the door on the Everett squad.

Sego played a sensational second half, responding to a first half benching in stellar fashion; he ran the Cougar offense and attacked the Trojan defense relentlessly. Scoreless in the first half, he finished with 19 second half points, hitting 10 of 10 free throws, grabbing 4 rebounds, and dishing out 6 assists.

Cook finished the game with a season high 30 points to go with 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. He was selected to the all-tournament team averaging 24 ppg. for the tournament. Brickley finished the game with a double double: 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 steals.

Austin Dunn struggled early, but played well down the stretch at crunch time, hitting some key baskets and free throws to get CCC over the hump. He finished the game with 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists.

JohnPaul Hafez provided some strong inside play, showing some rugged defense, grabbing 8 rebounds, and blocking 2 shots. CCC shot 47% from the floor while holding Everett to 34% shooting.

The Trojans launched deep howitzers, connecting on 11 of 45 three point attempts, while the Cougars were much more selective and efficient, hitting on 5 of 10 treys. Clackamas shot a solid 74% from the free throw line, compared to a frigid 42% by their opponents. Still the Cougars left some glaring room for improvement, turning the ball over 24 times and losing out on the rebound battle by a 54-46 margin. Clackamas continued to show well historically in the Red Devil Classic with the 3rd place trophy, marking the 8th consecutive year the Cougars have placed in the tournament and taken home hardware.

Cougars Nearly Win at Buzzer - Fall to Linfield JV
21-game win streak snapped

David FifeNovember 20, 2007

Oregon City, Ore.Clackamas 77 Linfield JV 78 (Box Score)
The Cougars (0-1) began the season with a 21-game winning streak, virtually an entire new roster, and a plethora of unanswered questions.

The night unfolded in disappointment and more questions to be asked. Sometimes growing up is painful, and this night was full of pain and frustration for the neophyte Cougars. Although Clackamas outplayed the visiting Wildcats in most areas, they got beaten in two critical areas: losing the rebound battle 46-41 and losing track of Linfield shooters on the perimeter, giving up 10 three-pointers, mostly on easy looks.

CCC shot a respectable 44% from the field and a crisp 78% at the free throw stripe, but hit only 5 of 18 threes (28%.) JC Cook turned in a solid game to lead the CCC team, with 18 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals. Austin Dunn added 10 points and 2 steals. David Fife had 8 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. Scott Martin chipped in 8 points and 3 rebounds. And 7' 1" freshman post Brad King was good for 8 points and 3 rebounds. Point guard Jeff Sego registered 8 points and 5 assists.

Clackamas jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the game, but allowed the Wildcats quickly back into the contest with back to back threes, which would become an all too familiar sight for the evening.

The game remained close throughout but Clackamas could never put the game away, missing a big free throw at the end of the game, then giving up the game-winning shot in the key with two seconds to play. The Cougars got one last desperation shot off at the buzzer, but it was off the mark, much like the Cougar performance.

West Albany grad looks ahead

Clif Wegner felt pestered throughout much of the basketball season.

He blames Brian Freeman.

Wegner is the Clackamas Community College basketball coach and Freeman is the man who led the Cougars to the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges basketball title and a 29-4 record.

“I’ve gotten sick of all the D1 coaches showing up in the gym this year,” he laughed. “Brian is the reason for that.”

COUGARS 2007 NWAACC CHAMPIONS
Men Defeat #2-ranked Bellevue for Crown
Cougars capture the 2007 NWAACC Men's Basketball Championship

March 04, 2007
Kennewick, WA. - The Cougars defeated second-ranked, North Division Champions, Bellevue Bulldogs (15-1, 28-4) 67-56 in a match that was a battle until the closing minutes.  For the Cougars, the championship game win put the finishing touch on a dream season: a perfect run through the South Division at 14-0, a 21-consecutive game winning streak to finish the season, a march though the NWAACC championship that vanquished the division champions from the West, East, and North division on three consecutive days, and a final, convincing statement to justify the team’s #1 ranking in the NWAACC coaches’ poll. The team’s final win, its 29th of the season, established an all-time record for wins in a season at Clackamas Community College. Here is summary off all four tournament games:

Clackamas 87, Blue Mountain 75  -- March 1, 2007
The Cougars opened 2007 NWAACC Tournament action facing a familiar opponent; Blue Mountain had beaten CCC in a preseason game in December. But it was all Clackamas in the rematch as the Cougars jumped out to a 13-3 lead. They kept the Timberwolves unbalanced throughout the first half and led 41-3 at intermission.

CCC held BMCC at a comfortable distance throughout the second half, winning by a final score of 87-75. The Cougars shot 50% from the field and 65% from the free throw line. CCC also converted 18 Timberwolf turnovers into 16 points and out rebounded their opponents by 42-40 margin.

The Cougars were paced by Brian Freeman’s 20 points and 17 rebounds. David Cernin had 17 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, and 4 steals to lead a superior Cougar back court. Maurice Ross finished with 17 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Stephen Vaughan tallied 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals. JR Morgan had 6 points and 3 steals. Nick Eldridge had 6 points and 2 rebounds. Nathaniel Germaneri added 2 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists. Luke Defrees had 5 points and 2 assists. The win marked 17 straight victories for Clackamas and, more importantly, put them into the championship quarterfinals.

Clackamas 87, Highline 86 -- March 2, 2007
Clackamas and Highline matched up in what might go down as one of the most memorable games in tournament history, a thrilling double overtime nail biter! Some billed it as the championship game; in retrospect, it may well have been. Highline jumped out to a 13-3 lead, forcing the Cougars into calling a time-out to regroup. Switching to a zone defense, CCC battled back to a 20-20 tie.  But the Thunderbirds, West Division Champions, spurted out to a 34-24 lead. But the Cougars roared back, showing everyone in the arena how champions respond by finishing the half with a gutsy 10-0 run, capped by a sensational steal by Stephen Vaughan. He drove the length of the floor and dished the ball to Maurice Ross who drained a 3 at the buzzer.

The Cougars had fought back to a 34-34 tie! The second half was as intense and competitive as basketball can be at the NWAACC level. At the end of regulation, the sensational Cougar defense came up with one more huge stop to give themselves the opportunity to win the game. With two seconds to go CCC flawlessly executed a full court inbounds play. Alex Brock’s 3 point shot at the buzzer brought the entire arena to its feet as it rolled around the rim and popped out. In the first overtime the Cougars dominated action to take a
five point lead, but failed to put the Thunderbirds away, missing several big free throws and then turning the ball over on their last possession.

In the second overtime, the difference was the defense and rebounding of the CCC team, coupled with balanced scoring from four players that carried the Cougars to the win. Clackamas shooters struggled throughout the game, shooting 40% from the field, 33% from the arc, and 60% from the charity stripe. For the game, Clackamas played just a little better basketball, grabbing 52 rebounds and only committing 11 turnovers.

Stephen Vaughan put on a memorable and sensational performance, hitting 9 of 12 shots and both his 3’s for a 30 point outburst. He also grabbed 9 rebounds and registered 2 assists, 2 steals, and 3 drawn charges. David Cernin tallied 17 points 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Brian Freeman scored 19 points and cornered 17 rebounds in another tremendous individual effort. Maurice Ross led his team with sensational defense, 9 points, and 5 assists. Nick Eldridge chipped in 3 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Alex Brock added 6 points, a huge assist , and a blocked shot. Nathaniel Germaneri was good for 2 rebounds, 1 assist, a blocked shot and a steal; his defensive intensity was an inspiration to the Cougars. Luke Defrees completed an outstanding defensive assignment and also scored a huge 3 pointer when the Cougars needed a boost in the first half.

For the Cougars, the hard fought victory extended their win streak to 19 games and put the Clackamas program in the semifinals for the third time in seven years.

SEMI-FINAL - Clackamas 75, Walla Walla 65 -- March 3, 2007
Clackamas faced its second league champion in as many nights, taking on the third-ranked Warriors from the East Division. The Cougar defense deserved the game ball for this victory, holding the up-tempo Warriors to their lowest total of the season. CCC used a solid first half to take a 39-28 advantage at the break. Then they held off several furious Walla Walla rallies
to claim the win.

CCC out-rebounded their opponents by a 49-40 advantage and also claimed a 18-8 edge in second chance points. The defensive trio of Maurice Ross, JR Morgan and Luke Defrees, limited Walla Walla’s key offensive player averaging 18 ppg.) to 3 points on 1-8 shooting. Ross also added 8 rebounds and 5 assists, while Defrees, a sophomore co-captain, nailed 3 threes and finished with 11 points and 2 rebounds. For the game, the Cougars converted 43% of its field goals, and 71% of its free throws.

Brian Freeman punished the Warriors inside, hitting 14 of 19 shots, and 8 of 11 free throws, for a career high 36 points. Freeman also grabbed 18 rebounds, and blocked 3 shots. Stephen Vaughan fought the bigger Warriors inside for 10 points and 9 rebounds. Nick Eldridge added 5 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals. David Cernin tossed in 10 points, grabbed 4  rebounds, dished out 5 assists, and had 5 steals. Nathaniel Germaneri sparkled again with 3 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. The win kept the Cougar victory string intact at 20 games, and put Clackamas in the title game for the first time since 1994.

CHAMPIONSHIP - Clackamas 67, Bellevue 56 -- March 4, 2007
The top-ranked Cougars faced the daunting task of defeating a third consecutive region champion in as many nights-- a first in tournament history. It looked bad early, as CCC was outscored 5-0 to start the game. But being a champion is about heart, and the Cougars roared back, eventually taking a 20-11 lead. At the half it was Clackamas 36, Bellevue, 27.

The Bulldogs fought back to a 50-50 tie in the second half, but the top-ranked CCC team refused to yield to the second-ranked North Division Champions.

Again, it was Brian Freeman who kept the Cougars in control. The Cougar big man had 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 assists, capping off what will surely go down as one of the most sensational four day tournament performances by a post player in NWAACC history.

David Cernin also made huge plays when his team needed them the most; he finished with 17 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Steven Vaughan added another inspirational defensive effort to his 11 points and 5 rebounds. Maurice Ross also showed up impressively on the defensive end while adding 4 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists. JR Morgan also contributed to the Cougar guards’ dominance by giving the Bellevue backcourt fits and dishing out 2 assists while attacking the BCC defense.

Nick Eldridge also anchored the defense while hitting for 7 points and fighting for 5 tough rebounds. Nathaniel Germaneri chipped in another superb defensive stint to go with his 2 points and 3 rebounds. And Luke Defrees again contributed a courageous effort, flawlessly filling a challenging defensive assignment; he finished with 8 points and 4 rebounds, while hitting 5 of 6 free throws at crunch time to keep the Bulldogs at bay and salt the win away.

For the game, CCC beat the bigger Bulldogs on the boards, 42-36 and also outscored their opponents 18-6 at the three point line. Clackamas shot respectably: 41 % from the field and 71% from the line. Also clearly in evidence in the title game was the hallmark of the CCC program: passing and team play--the Cougar TEAM assisted on 19 of their 23 baskets!

Three CCC players were selected to the all tourney team: Steven Vaughan for the second team, David Cernin for the first team, and Brian Freeman as the tournament MVP.
