2006-07 Women’s Basketball Preview
Cougar ladies will 'bring it'
November 10, 2006 - The 2006-07 season is just around the corner! The Lady Cougs are working hard preparing to defend their 2006 Southern Region Co-Championship title. The look of this season’s squad will remind fans of the 2004 team that went on to win the NWAACC Championship. The Lady Cougars are a bigger, more deliberate team, and should be a much better defensive team than the last couple of seasons.
The 2006-07 team will be led by a quartet of returning sophomores: Charday Hunt, the 2006 Southern Region MVP, will look to build from her awesome freshman season (20pts, 7rbs per game), and continue to put up similar statistics while moving to the Wing position. Kellyn Cooper who nearly averaged a double-double last season (9 pts, 10 rbs), will be asked to take on more of a scoring role this season with her much improved post moves and excellent vision around the basket, as well as continue to pull down rebounds and defend the paint. Monique Tribble will continue to make known her presence in the paint, in addition to her enduring threat as a shooter from 15-17ft. After red-shirting the 2005-2006 season, Vanessa Schmitz returns but with a new role from that of her freshman year. Moving from the post position out to the wing, she will be able to handle the ball more, showcase her ability to shoot outside, yet remain a threat all the way to the basket. Leadership from these four exceptional players will be key to the success of this team, but they will have a lot of help from the newcomers.
The new faces are led by 5-7 sophomore guard Sarah Lindley. Sarah played her HS ball at Lake Oswego as well as one season at Portland CC (2004-05) before taking a year away from basketball. Sarah will bring much needed leadership, toughness, and a defensive presence to this year’s team. Rachel Copeland, 5-10 freshman wing, led Marist HS to the Sky-Em Title last year and was named MVP of the league. She is a very skilled, athletic player who will be asked to play both post and perimeter positions this year. Kelsey New, 5-8 freshman guard, helped lead Douglas HS to a 3rd place State finish as well as the Far West League Championship. Kelsey excels as a shooter and a player who knows and understands the game very well. Reese Wolfe, 5-3 freshman guard, comes to us from Benson HS in Portland, where she led her team to a third place finish and a berth into the State Tournament. Reese is a very athletic Point Guard who has the ability to create shots off the dribble as well as drive and dish to set up her teammates. Stephanie Pool, 5-9 forward, is another sophomore transfer from Portland CC. Stephanie was a 2003 graduate from Lebanon HS where she was a 2-yr letter winner. She brings depth and vision to our front court, as well as a much needed physical presence in paint.
The season will get underway in one week when the Cougs travel to Seattle to play 2 games in the Shoreline Tournament on November 17 and 18th. The Cougars home opener will be Thanksgiving weekend when they host the annual Thanksgiving Invitational. Clackamas will host Peninsula CC at 2pm on Friday the 24th. Please come out and support the team on their way to another exciting season! You can follow the Lady Cougars all season long here on the Cougar's Web site. Check back often as each game we will have a game summary and box score. Thank you for supporting the Lady Cougar Basketball Team.
