Cougars & Storm Split Doubleheader

May 08, 2007
Jesse Jensen throws a complete game in a 4-2 Cougar win on Tuesday.Salem, Ore. - Cougars split a well played double header on Tuesday in Salem. Game one was a battle that left the Cougars on top 4-2, behind the pitching of Jesse Jensen (Barlow HS).

Offensively Jason Anderson (Hudson’s Bay HS) led the charge with two hits, a walk, and two runs scored. Tony Stutevoss had a walk, an RBI single and a run scored. Todd McBride (The Dalles HS) continued his offensive terror with an RBI single, a run scored, and a walk. Bryce Roby (Wilsonville HS) had a great game with two hits, including an RBI double in the 8th inning.

The Cougars played well in the night cap, but dropped it 5-4 in a tremendous effort. Nate Reif (Clackamas HS) pitched well most of the game, but made a couple of mistake pitches. Offensively and defensively the Cougs played well, but needed a couple of clutch hits with men in scoring position to secure a win.

Tony Stutevoss (Madison HS) had two hits, Eric Renander (Forest Grove HS) had an RBI single, and McBride added a double to the cause. Jim Bray (Gresham HS) led off the 3rd inning with a solo HR, Ben Janal (Lakeridge HS) had an RBI single, Sean Sprauer clutched up with an RBI single, and Bryan Roby (Wilsonville HS) contributed a single in the 6th.

The Cougars (11-13, 19-17) remain in third place in the Southern Region, a half game behind Linn-Benton (12-12, 18-20) [standings].

Clackamas Cougar Baseball
2007 Clackamas Cougar Baseball Outlook2007 Outlook

January 31, 2007
Oregon City, Ore. - The Clackamas baseball team has been working very hard in preparation for the upcoming season. The 2007 version of the Cougars has been working out 3 hours a day as a group; while incorporating individual workouts consisting of weight training, speed and agility, running and video analysis. The 2007 season begins on March 2rd & 4th with double-headers in The Dalles, Ore.

2007 Position-by-Position Evaluation:

CATCHER
Ben
Janal is the front runner to get most of the work behind the plate for the Cougs. Hailing from Lakeridge HS, Coach Robinson added, “This kid can play!” “ Ben is working hard and getting better.” He has also been putting in the time in the weight room. He can hit, hits with power, has good speed and receives well. The Cougars will be solid here with Robbie Huth (Aloha HS) as the next guy. In addition to Janal and Huth, Steven Baker could see some time behind the plate as well.

FIRST BASE
The Cougars will have Cameron Childress (Bend HS) and Jim Bray (Gresham HS) both are improving on a daily basis. Coach Robinson believes that the team will be solid with either one getting the nod. The other guy not starting here will be hitting as the DH, so a flip flop in these two roles is an easy fit.

SECOND BASE
The Cougars believe that Jason Anderson (Hudson’s Bay, B.C.) had a great fall season and is a top defensive infielder. Bryan Roby (Wilsonville HS) is working on the move from SS to 3rd, to 2nd base. “Either one will be very good at the two bag,” added Robinson. “Bryan has the better bat at this time.”

THIRD BASE
The Cougars have possibly one of the best infielders in the NWAACC according to Robinson. Tony Stutevoss (Madison HS) is an outstanding third baseman. In 2006, Tony spent time at 3 Band 2B, but Coach Robinson said they are making him a home at the “hot corner”. Bryan Roby would move in next as the Cougars most versatile infielder.

SHORTSTOP
Clackamas will return an excellent SS in Eric Renander. Eric had a good spring last season for the Cougs, but can on this summer playing for the Ringer Baseball Club. Ringer is one of the best summer programs around. This fall season was Eric’s best showing, as he went to the NWAACC sophomore showcase and was the arguably the best infielder there. He played great at shortstop, and was errorless in seven attempts at third base; his first time playing the position. He also performed well at the plate with a hit and a couple of RBIs. Chris Ferguson (Westview HS) will be mentored at shortstop, as the back up guy. Chris is a good infielder but he has a tough role to fill. “He will be a good one in the future for the Cougs”, added Robinson.

OUTFIELD
Logan McDonald (Reynolds HS) will return in Right field for the team with a much improved attitude. He is exceptional in the outfield and will hit three. Todd McBride (The Dalles HS) was one of the top recruits in the state of Oregon. We landed him; he will cover the acreage in Center field. He is tremendous, as he can hit, hit with power, throw and runs like a deer! Left field will probably be Sean Sprauer (West Salem HS) as he is an outstanding player. He will solidify an above average outfield. David Cook (West Linn HS) is our other outfielder. He is good but just needs to show more. David is just in a mix of fast, strong, good outfielders, which happen to be exceptional. Tyler Shull is injured and we are uncertain of his return.

PITCHERS - Coach Robinson felt like it was too soon to tell, but he made a few predictions.

Chad Bennett (Sandy HS) will be the number one guy. He is strong, with 4+ pitches and has shown to be the most consistent. He will be good.  Jesse Jensen (Barlow HS) will be one of our starting pitchers. He has shown good ability during fall ball. He was consistent and picked up good innings with few runs given up. Chris Hillard (Bend HS) is a returner that we expect to get lots of innings, however he is still working on his consistency. We believe that he will come around. Bryce Roby (Wilsonville HS/Lewis & Clark College) is getting stronger every workout. Bryce could be a starter, middle guy, or long relief but he will help us. He will also swing the left-handed bat for us in some roles.

Jon Anderson (Tigard HS) is a big strong right-hander that we see as a starter. He needs to improve his role by being more consistent, but looks like a top pitcher. Jon is also an outstanding student and will get his AA degree spring term. Nate Reif (Clackamas HS) is a guy that will win some games in the NWAACC. He is a good pitcher with a great work ethic, a good student and great team player. Jeff Bjorklund (Sunset HS) is a good 3rd baseman that we have moved to a full-time pitcher. He is penciled in as a starter, with a big role and lots of innings.

Russell Lende (Vernonia HS) - With a few games under his belt we believe that Russell will be a proven pitcher. He has good stuff, a great work ethic, but needs to show consistency. David LaDoucer (The Dalles HS) is a big right-hander that is getting better. He has arm strength and good stuff. He needs to work on consistency in his delivery and we believe that he will get there. Stephen Baker (Gladstone HS) is a catcher & pitcher; he will be a duel position player for the Cougs this season. He is a good catcher with a big arm, so we put him on the mound as well. After the showing this winter, Stephen will throw on our staff this spring.
