ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is inspired by a morphology that relates to natural elements, evolution, zoology and mechanical principles. From my studies of these concepts I have collected hundreds of images and have created hundreds of sketches. These rudimentary sketches were refined into ideas that I eventually worked into a series of large-scale charcoal drawings. The finished drawings were the basis for creating the sculptures. The sculptural forms are made from a fixotropic plastic, which is a two-part mix that can be painted over a Styrofoam core. The sculptures resemble plants or sea life and though they look mostly organic, the initial inspiration for some are derived from mechanical forms.
