ARTIST STATEMENT
By trying to make small
statements concerning my view of America as an armed out of control consumer,
I want museum goers, gallery hoppers, and people off the street to look
at my work—and ask questions. To combat
the out of control consumption culture I live in, my paintings are constructed
out of reused materials: the thrown out and discarded. By using symbols
of hip hop culture in my paintings, I explore how mainly white Americans
consume a Black American art form. In my work that focus on the USA’s
consumption of the world’s resources through purchase, intimidation,
and armed force, I hope to encourage an exchange of views and open up conversations
about ‘America as consumer’ and the military actions of my
country. My work is concerned with the issues of consumption, the
end results and consequences of America’s quest for more.
