International Student Resources & Support

Personal Counseling & Academic Advising: When you come to the United States, you will learn to adapt to a new culture. You may experience some discomfort before you are able to function well in a new setting. This is called Culture Shock. It is a normal experience and nearly everyone goes through it. Be assured that you will not be alone in this experience. International students have a designated counselor at Clackamas to support international students. The international counselor is there to help with personal, career and general issues, including on-call emergency services, instruction of classes and cultural events. Contact ellenw@clackamas.edu or call 503-657-6958 ext. 2500 for counseling and advising information.

International Student Club and Social Events: The International Student Club and staff host a social event each term. International students can meet and learn about each other’s culture and the North American culture. Examples of past events include Thanksgiving Dinner, Valentine's Day Luncheon, going out to ethnic restaurants, attending plays and movies, and recreational activities.

International/Multicultural Week: Every year the foreign language department sponsors student plays and musical groups, and food is for sale from around the world. It is a free event for staff, students and community members.

Intercultural Communication Class: International and North American students take this class together and explore cultural differences in values, beliefs, and behaviors. In this interactive class, the students learn from each other, as well as from lectures, readings and cultural activities. This class is a good way for international students to improve their English conversation, while earning college credit. Advanced Program for Intensive English (PIE) students may take the class, also.

Safety: Clackamas Community College is a safe environment for students to attend school. The administration values the safety of their staff and students. There are staff members available when students are attending classes to help solve emergencies or any problem a student may encounter. If you have concerns about safety you can contact the International Advisors at 503-657-6958 ext. 2596 or 2600.

Health Insurance: You must have health insurance to attend Clackamas Community College. If you do not have health insurance, here are some options:
